The dead give away for a dying controller is the red light on the numbers will flash.

When you plug your controller in and hit your PS button, at the top you'll see a controller symbol and a battery icon. If the battery bars are moving then it's charging. When it's fully charged it will display 3 bars solid even when plugged in.

I've been wrong before; but I'm 99% sure you cannot turn off the system and have the controller charge. As far as I know the system must be on while charging the controller. From my experience it takes about an hour or 2 to get it fully charged.

Good luck and if i've helped you please give me 4 thumbs up!

Connect controller using USB message

Your controler is either low on battery charge, or it needs to re-sync with the system.
If you still have the message while it is plugged in, then either the plug is worn, cable has worn out, or it is the wrong kind of USB cable. Some cables do not have a data connection and although they may work to charge the controler, they will not work to sync the controler to the system. Make sure nobody switched your cable for the kind used only to charge cellphones, as USB charger cables do not usually have the data pins enabled.
If it is the correct cable and works for other PS3 controlers, then it could be a worn socket on your controler and no way to really fix except to buy a new controler.
Another, more rare possibility is something wrong with the controler internally, which can sometimes be fixed by using a small pin, like a safety pin and pressing it into the tiny "reset" hole on the bottom of the controler, while it is plugged in to the USB cable and PS3., then pressing the PS3 button on the controler to make sure it's powered on during reset. The "reset hole" is very small, but can be found closest to the screw nearest where the cable plugs in, on the bottom of the controler.

My Mad Catz PlayStation 3 Call of Duty: Black Ops PrecisionAIM Controller isn't picked up by my PS3 even when plugged in with the USB, any idea why?

I have had the same problem with my MadCatz PrecisionAIM 360 Controller. It is because of MadCatz low quality standards. Basically the only way to fix it is to open the controller and re-solder the connections

I have a battery operated controller and can not pair it to ps3 please help the controller came with the ps3 as well as standard one thank you

To sync a controller you need to plug it into the usb cable that comes with the playstation itself. If you've lost the cable you will need to buy a new one unless you can find a similar cable.
This allows the controller to be used on multiple playstations, to synchronise a controller to a certain playstation, the usb cable is vital!
    Hope this helps.

My controller wont turn my ps3 on or wont work at all

It's a simple process and only takes around five mins! (if your good with your hands) there are five star head screws in the back of the controller remove these and remove the back casing ( there is a clip at the bottom between the two sticks push this in and lift up) remove the battery plug then plug back in, replace the back casing and replace the screws. Plug the USB charging cable to the ps3 and the hand set, press the playstation button to turn on the handset JOB DONE!! Hope this helps!

Seems that the battery is low on power, when the controller is connected to the usb port of the ps3, all leds should start flashing, this show that the battery of the controller is recharging, when done the leds go off.
Note that before the leds start flashing that it can thake up an minute before it starts doing that.
Keep your ps3 on to recharge the controller.

PS3 Controller will only work when plugged into the USB

I picked up the folling troubleshooting tips from the PlayStation Knowledge Center. I know it may seem silly or insulting; This is not my intention. Problems like this are usually just little things you're over-looking. Give thest tips a shot, one by one, and see if your solution is in here. If it isn't, message me back here & we'll try something else to get your controller working, ok? By the way... Is it a sixaxis controller or dualshock?
    • Verify if the SIXAXIS or DUALSHOCK 3 wireless controller works with the USB cable.
    • Verify that the SIXAXIS or DUALSHOCK 3 wireless controller's battery is charged.
    • Attempt to pair the SIXAXIS or DUALSHOCK 3 wireless controller to another PLAYSTATION 3 system. This helps determine whether the problem is with the system or the controller.
    • Attempt to connect another SIXAXIS or DUALSHOCK 3 wireless controller to the PLAYSTATION 3.
    • Move closer to the PLAYSTATION 3 system. The maximum range for Bluetooth is 30 feet.
    • Make sure you have less than seven Bluetooth peripherals paired with the PLAYSTATION 3.
    • Unplug any other USB device plugged into the system when pairing the SIXAXIS or DUALSHOCK 3 wireless controller.
