Sure, lcd tvs need to be tweeked depending on the light in the room the darker the worse the picture. so try this
from standard:
picture: 85 to 95 %
brightness: 45% or adjust the black of the video to the black of the pilar bars to equilize them.
color: 32 to 38% or until the flesh tones are not so hot
sharpness: low 10%
tint: always to center
color temp: cool1
back lamp ( if avalible) low when lights are dim, high when lights are bright.
the problem with LCD is they don't look so good with dark sceens. the contast ratio is very low. natively 3000:1 aas compaired to plasma or other direct view TVs. the LCD is back lite and the thin materal of the LCD can not completely block the back light from coming thru. there for the complete "black screen" is illuminated "blue". the best thing is to keep the lights on bright in the room for the best picture.

Yes more detail is definitely needed, however not ignoring may keep someone else from getting a solution they need so...

Whenever someone's television is displaying a bad picture the order of troubleshooting at home is first source, next signal, then service (what I like to call the three S's).

Personally, in your case natedoggs, I think it is a settings issue. Sometimes I see the pictures on some of these in the store and I frown :( thinking that no one is going to purchase a television with a picture like that even though it is a good television. So, the first thing I do is change the picture mode based on what is being shown.

Samsung's choices are standard, dynamic, natural, movie, game, custom...
I also try turning on/off/high/low the Eco dimming and the dynamic contrast.
If that still doesn't work, I tweak each of the settings until I am pleased. (Then reset picture settings if all else fails).

Back to everyone else: Source - check each device that is attached to the television to make sure you get a bad picture from all of them.

Setting - If all the sources show a bad picture, then do some tweaking like I recommended to natedoggs above

Service - If you are absolutely certain it is not one of the devices or the myriad of settings choices these days, you may have a service issue :(

To view the captions, all you have to do is turn on the decoder by following these simple steps:
  1. Access your TV menu screen using your remote or by pressing a button on the face of the TV.
  2. Select the closed captions heading. Several different caption options may appear.
  3. Select the "CC1" option.
  4. Exit the menu.
Closed captions should appear within approximately one minute of adjusting this setting. If they do not, review this portion of your television's operating manual or contact the manufacturer of the television set.

Picture Mode reverts always to Dynamic after several minutes

The set was a store demo, and the options were set so they could not be adjusted. On instruction from Samsung I pressed MENU and VOLUME buttons on the side of the set and hold for 7 seconds The display reverts to Standard from Dynamic. The Remote Options button showed Store Demo, but now shows Standard. All memory functions seem to function now. Thanks for your help.

Your TV is in DEMO-STORE MODE.
Go to menu, find Plug & Play option, start it, and when asked, select Home Mode, than Enter and than just Exit.
:-)

Samsung LE46F8 picture setting

It sounds like your TV is in Shop Mode.
Shop mode is a set of picture parameters that have been optimized for a store showroom or display floor. Shop mode does not allow you save any picture settings such as brightness or contrast.
To get the TV out of Shop Mode press and hold the Menu button on the front panel for three seconds, the picture will blank momentarily then reappear with “Dynamic Mode” shown on the screen. At this point the picture parameters can be changed and saved.

Samsung lcd tv le32r8 (Picture - Movie setting)

The TV is probably in Shop mode, when your TV is initially turned on you can choose between Shop mode or Home Mode.
In Shop mode the TV automaticly returns to the standard setting after a while, they do this so customers can "play" with it.

Press down de Volume button and then hold down the Menu button for five seconds on the side panel of the tv.

Edge Enhancement Option Disabled...

edge enhancement option i think would be enabled if you are in dynamic or movie mode. What it does is to enhance the contrast of the edges of 2 different colors.

I have the LA32S8, similar specs but only 7000:1 CONTRAST ratio. when playing dvd, i set it to movie mode. Settings vary on different tv and player. you can adjust first the backlight, then brightness then contrast, color and sharpness. the brightness you adjust by choosing the level that shows enough details on dark scenes. adjust if its too dark not to see the details of the scene. contrast, you can set by distiguishing vivid colors of the picture, dont put too much contrast as your picture would look flat. it should have a 3d look, same also with sharpness, you can experiment on the face of a person to show details on the edges.
color you set just enough to make it accurate on color reproduction.

My settings for movie are
contrast 92
brightness 49
sharpness 23
color 57
tint g48 r52
backlight 7
tone warm1
digital NR off
black adjust high
dynamic ocntrast high
gamma +2
edge enhancement on
color space auto
