I have a desktop with an amer megatrend bios.I want to get a new bios that works with win 8.1 and needs to have support for PAE,NX.and SSE2

It's best to simply replace the entire Mother Board than try to replace the BIOS. Replacing a Mother Board vs replacing a BIOS is way easier.

Your current BIOS MIGHT work if you can find a flash file for it, but you have to be careful. If the BIOS your flashing isn't in production it's usually only PATCH flash file, to fix a problem with a BIOS, not upgrade it. And if you use the wrong flash file, it will TRASH your BIOS!

The BIOS, which is a chip, is usually micro-soldered to the Mother Board with high precision, by a robotic arm, and not easily removed or duplicated. The exception is if you happen to have a BIOS chip, that can be replaced, in a socket, but this is unusual instead of common.

The best source for BIOS info such as you are looking for is the American Megatrends Website itself at: AMI American Megatrends Inc Aptio (compatible with Windows 8) however their website is for the Mother Board manufacturer so you can't buy the BIOS as a consumer, but through a reseller, AMI Office, Authorized Representatives, etc (AMI American Megatrends Inc How to Buy).

You can however, buy a replacement Mother Board with a BIOS already installed on it (that's the way you usually buy them - with the BIOS pre-installed on the Mother Board) that's PAE, NX, and SSE2 and whatever else you want compatible. A great website to find computer parts and kits, new, refurbished, out of box, etc is the Tiger Direct Website at: TigerDirect com Electronics Tablets Phones Office Supplies Video Games. Just search for BIOS to find your specs, then check the bottom for possible best Mother Board kits to replace the one you have now. Hope this helps. :-)

How to upgrade bios

If you're talking about flashing the BIOS on the mother board, you must go to the website for your specific mother board or brand of computer. Go to the Dell site for a Dell, HP site for an HP computer and so on. The site will ask you to identify your specific computer. Then you'll be able to get a list of drivers, upgrades and BIOS updates that may be available for your computer. Note: Flashing the BIOS is not to be undertaken lightly as this can kill a mother board if something goes wrong.

Bad bios flash, backup gives bad checksum error. downloaded correct ver - still bad checksum. what should I do? AMI bios ver 1.0

Is the mother board working? If so, why are you flashing the bios? If the bios is bad and can not be flashed, you may be able to buy a pre-flashed chip if it uses a removable flash chip. Try this site but you can find others on the Internet.

Motherboard BIOS softwere for update

The process of upgrading the BIOS on a computer is also
called "FLASHING" the BIOS.

On very old computers (486 and older) the BIOS may be
permanently programmed into read-only memory chips,
which are not flash-able, although it may be possible to
replace the chips, or re-program them using special
equipment by a qualified technician.

On virtual all modern computers, the BIOS can be updated
using new data and a special FLASH program available via
download from the manufacturer.

This is a very dangerous procedure that can destroy the
motherboard if performed incorrectly, and should not be
performed unless absolutely necessary, such as when
you computer or software will not run properly without it.

Most mother board manufacturer's (for example Asus) offer
software patches and downloads on their web site, as well
as BIOS upgrades.

Note that the BIOS is 100% board specific, installing the wrong
BIOS can permanently destroy *********** board, so make sure
that you download the correct one for your board.

Once you have the downloaded the BIOS upgrade, there are 3
possibilities:

1) The downloaded file is self-installing, either from Windows,
or it creates a boot-able diskette, which in turn contains all
the files needed to update (FLASH) the BIOS.

2) The BIOS comes with a a separate installer (.exe) which
either runs from Windows or via a boot-able diskette.

3) The existing BIOS has a "built-in" flash utility, accessable
through the BIOS settings. This utility runs at a very low
level without any operating system to self-update the BIOS
from your download binary file, located on the hard drive or
on a diskette.

This is by far the best and safest way to do the job, but only
if your motherboard and (existing BIOS) has that capability.

===
In any event, the first step is to visit the manufacturer's WEB
site, then go to SUPPORT or DOWNLOADS.

Find the exact model and version number of you motherboard
in the manufacturer's list, and download the latest BIOS
update, and any installation (or flashing) utilities that come
with it.

1) Follow the manufacturer's instruction exactly !!!!

2) Do not turn off the computer until the BIOS update is
complete, and you are instructed to do so !!!

N.B.
The computer BIOS is the lowest level program on your PC,
without which the computer CANNOT read the disk drives or
perform the lowest necessary functions.

If the BIOS is damaged, or
If the wrong upgrade is installed, or
If the upgrade is performed incorrectly, or
If the upgrade is interrupted or crashes before finishing,

the computer may become unable to repair itself, and
the mother-board may become permanently unusable.

(This depends on the actual mother-board and BIOS design,
and on the damage done by the failed installation)

Good luck,
