Before you send the camera in for repairs, try this free fix. The problem that you described is frequently battery related. Make sure that your batteries are the correct type for the camera, and that they are fresh/fully charged. If the batteries are OK, the problem may be due to corrosion on the contacts inside the camera. Remove the batteries and wipe the inside contacts firmly with a dry cloth (heavy corrosion may require cleaning with a wire brush, steel wool, or sand paper). Remove any residue that may have fallen into the battery compartment during cleaning, wipe the ends of the batteries, and replace them in the camera. This cleaning process works about 90% of the time, and I hope that it cures your problem.

Here are some simple things to try first for a camera that won't take a picture when the shutter button is pressed, or with an inoperative flash. They won't work for every case, but they're worth a try:

Tips for a great answer:
Nov 20, 2014 | Canon EOS Rebel XS 35mm SLR Camera
Mar 11, 2013 | Samsung DigiMax Cameras
Flash forced off. it has 2 folders behind the camera
Camera takes up to 30 pictures (2 per second up to 15 seconds) while the Shutter button is held. When the shutter button is released, only the last 8 pictures are saved. (Capture an event when the precise timing is uncertain e.g., a child blowing out birthday candles.)
