Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

Bought Samsung refrigerator in June 2009, model RB196ABRS. Working fine but there is a water leak behind the veg & fruit drawers. The water seeps from the rear wall at the back of the drawers. I can see where because it leaves a yellow stain. This water has to be cleared out every week in order to prevent it from going outside the fridge (in the freezer section). Is this an easy fix or should I call for service (under warranty).

Yes. Because of the work involved, I'm calling a repair man. This fridge is on warranty.

Your evaporator coils frost up in normal use and every eight hours or so the entire unit shuts down and the defrost heater comes on to melt the frost. This cycle last about 20 minutes. The melted frost drips into a drain pan and through a drain tube to the drain tray under the freezer/refrigerator where it's evaporated by the condenser fan.

Your drain tube may be stopped up with ice at the upper end because it drains too slow because it's stopped up at the lower end in the evaporator pan under the unit at the floor. It can get dust and mold in it. Once you get the ice out at the top a little pressure with a turkey baster will usually clear it out. Flushing it out with hot water and clorox may help.
Make sure it drains quick enough to prevent refreezing. . The drain should be located below the evaporator coils on the lower back of the fridge. If this repeatedly happens with yours, you may can prevent it by taking a bare copper wire and wrap it around a fin near the heater and put the other end a few inches down the drain. The heat convection may prevent it from freezing.

Water in the fruit and vegetable draweres

You might have the frig. temperature set too low. Set it at 38 deg. check actual temp. with gage. What happens is ice builds up in the drain tube that runs down to the bottom when the fridge defrosts therefore causing water to run into the veg. drawers. Ice buildup is preventing the water from running out at the bottom where it should. Just raise your fridge temperature a little and the problem should go away. Hope this helps.

Water is pooling under the veg/fruit drawers..cant tell where its from. Freezer temp is uneffected, temp appears fine, no condensation anywhere on refrig or contents...The first I noticed it was a week...

Your freezer goes through a defrost cycle and drains the melted ice ,somewhere the drain is clogged or iced up .Look for a little hole or hose coming into drain pan underneath and trace up.Might have to take back off.

Bottom vegetable/fruit drawer freezing fruit

to the left of the bottom drawer is a veg/meat slide switch.make sure it is all the way on veg.if it is on meat,it opens a small doorway to the freezer and lets the cold air in and will freeze the food in the bottom drawer.in some cases, you will need to remove the drawer and shelf and then take apart the doorway.ball up some putty and jam it it the hole to completely seal it off
