Question about Sears Craftsman LiftMaster Chamberlain Garage Door Opener Wireless Keypad Model 976LM Security+

1 Answer

Just replaced Main Drive gear. Trying to get door to open and close as before, but not happening. Door will open about 3 feet and stop. when closing it acts like it wants to close more as it meets the floor. When reopening, there appears to be slack and jerks when opening, causing chain to jump Tee rail and jamming up. Have done the adjustment on closing and opeing force with no results and also adjusted the Limit switches to the point where nothing is working and I don't remember the original position the limit switches were in before I started adjusting. Frustrating and too many hours of this nonsense. I need help.

Hello. Your problem is frustrating but I believe I can assist you. The problem is that the chain that actually moves the door up and down is so far out of sync. that you are getting the symptoms that you are.
Take these steps:
1. Disconnect the door from the opener using the emergency pull rope.
2. Check to make sure that the door actually goes up and down as it should without the opener attached at all.
3. Assuming that the door does go up and down, let's focus on the chain.
4. Operate the door and check it's current path. What you will find is that the Chain will need to be taken off of the drive sprocket on top of the opener and adjusted to permit the door to travel it's necessary route. DO not work on the chain without unplugging the door opener as it can really bite!
5. Loosen up the tension on the chain enough to remove the chain from the teeth of the sprocket and move it around to where it needs to be. You can get a general idea of how to set it by determining where it now stops and setting the trolley accordingly.
Regards, J.

My door opener is a Searcraftmans 1/2 hp. The door opens about 2 feet and stops. Press the button and it closes. Door moves freely when disengaged. Any suggestions

You most likely have a stripped drive gear. Remove the cover from the motor unit and it will be obvious if this is the case. It is a white nylon gear just in front of the motor.

Door starts to open goes up several feet and then won't finish opening and then closes.

You have either a broken door spring or a stripped drive gear. The drive gear is white nylon and is just in front of the motor. It will be obvious if it is bad.

The garage door closes and then opens up again, I have to close it several times before it secures. There are no obstructions. Is this a sensitivity problem?

More than one thing can cause this type problem.

If the main light flashes 10 times when the door reverses it is a door sensor problem. Make sure they are pointed at one another and the small light on each one is not flickering ever so slightly.

If the door reverses when it hits the floor it is a sign that the door is traveling a bit to far. The adjustment for this is on the side of the motor unit. Turn the 'down limit' in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the cover. Some tweaking will probably be necessary.

Door won't stay closed, then opens only partially.

If the main light flashes 10 times when the door reverses it is a door sensor problem. Each sensor has a small light that must be on and not blinking for them to work properly. If one of them is not on tweak them a bit to make sure they are pointed at one another.

The stopping about 1/3 of the way up is either a broken door spring, a main drive gear that is going bad or an adjustment to the 'up force'. The 'up force' control is on the back of the motor unit near where all those white wires go. Increase it a bit. It will sometimes compensate for a gear that is going bad but if this is the case it will start doing the same thing soon.

Door stops opening at about 2 feet.

On the rear of the motor unit you will find the 'up force' adjustment. Increase this a bit. You need to also take the time to remove the cover and look at the drive gear. It is a white nylon gear just in front of the motor and may be going bad.

Liftmaster security + model 1265 NOT CLOSING PROPERLY

wbuero, I had same problem two weeks. The door springs weaken over time and may need to be tightened - check opening force manually. Manufacturer also recommended reviewing install guide to be sure opener arm is attached at proper angle. The opener on my professionally installed door was not connected properly. It that doesn't work, the opener drive train or door track/wheels may need maintenence.
