Scan for channels, if you don't pick up any digital channels you probably don't have a digital tuner,

I need to connect a VGA dell monitor my Toshiba Laptop

HDMI is digital
VGA (the 15 pin connector) is analog.
If your connector has the digital to analog interface it should work, but likely it does not have that chip and thus will not work.

Your description of the problem tells me it may never work as you have it connected. Possibly it might be that the monitor is required to be powered on before the laptop is booted, but that only works in some cases.

I have also seen some work if a 2-step connector is used.
VGA to DVI connector, followed by DVI to HDMI connector.
DVI was the step toward digital that came before the HDMI standard was implemented and was only partially digital. DVI and VGA do not carry control signals nor audio. HDMI carries both those as well as the video.

YMMV but I think it would be cheaper and more efficient to actually purchase a monitor with a digital input (HDMI or DVI).
Without the digital/analog converter interface a digital output device (your laptop with HDMI out) can never operate an analog device (your Dell monitor with VGA input).

Make sure you have the menu set on digital channels not cable. Set antenna to air to pickup digital hd channels.

These are Digital speakers and not suitable for Toshiba satellite units. Most sound cards in the L series are analogue only. So your own Diagnosis was on the money.

Speakers and mic input not working anymore

Have you done a windows update recently? It could have been caused by a updated driver that your computer doesn't really like.

Or is your output device set to digital instead to analog?

Toshiba 32A12 stuck on channel 9

Try to browse on its menu. Look for channel lock or re-enable it. Other way of parental lock, I use to do that before if I want to stick to one channel and discourage other to use it for that day/time. Only that it is on different brand.

Guide

This TV is analog, meaning there are no "straight digital" inputs, and the tuner itself is NTSC (analog), and not ATSC (digital). You will need a digital converter box to receive over-the-air (broadcast) digital television stations. This does NOT, however, preclude you from purchasing Digital Cable or Digital Satellite, and using the analog output on their converter boxes. The television will display high-definition images from those boxes and other sources.

I have the owner's manual in .pdf (adobe acrobat) format. Leave me your email address and I'll send it to you.

Thanks,
Rob

Analog antenna

Hi matti1982,

According to the FCC’s dedicated website at http://www.dtv.gov, the same antenna you use right now for an analog reception will likely work well to receive digital channels. I am not aware of a package bundling the two products together, but it is quite possible a retailer could do so. I would check out what the FCC has to say about the transition to digital broadcasting before determining if you will buy a new antenna.

Thank you,
Jason,
