Question about Computers & Internet

2 Answers

My router is broadcasting an internet connection to my devices (laptop & I-phone) but is not passing the connection through to my desktop computer. Everytime I hook up the router, I lose internet to my desktop. If I hook the I-net cable directly to my desktop, no problem.

It is a Linksys Wireless G Broadband Router MN#WRT54GX2 Stand Alone. Cable to the modem, then to router, then ethernet to the desktop.

Hi there Severns,

Is your problem having to connect your desktop computer via wireless connectivity? Because you mentioned that using your cable from router to your desktop, there is a connectivity. If you have a wireless card on your desktop, then make sure the drivers are installed properly on the desktop computer. If it was successfully installed, then you may need to reset your router to factory defaults by pressing and holding the small reset button at the back of the printer.

If you need further instructions, please let me know.

What is the make and model of the router. IS it a seperate one or is it all in one with the modem?

So cat5 cable comes out of the modem and then connects to the router and then you have a cat 5 from the router to the desktop and when you do that, the desktop cannot connect?

When you plug in the desktop to the router do you get the lights to come on in the router?

Have you tried resetting the router by pressing the button on the back?

  • Brad Brown Feb 07, 2010

Do you have the setup cd that came with the router?

If so please hook the router up to the desktop and insert the cd and check the DHCP settings.

They should be set to auto.

If not what is the operating system on that computer?

How to connect new devices to Thomson router (TG585 v7)

Using a command prompt and telnet:
Type in telnet 192.168.1.254 and hit Enter. If this doesn't work, then you don't have Telnet installed and will need to go to Start ? Control Panel ? Programs ? Programs and Features ? Turn Windows Features on or off ? Ensure TELNET CLIENT is checked and click OK.
When prompted, the default username is Administrator (case sensitive) and the default password is either blank or the serial number of the router (case sensitive):Click to open image

Type in "connection unbind application=SIP(TCP) port=5060" (without the quotation marks) and press Enter. If you get a 'unknown command' message returned once you press enter, then type in: "connection unbind application=SIP port=5060" (without the quotation marks)
Type in "saveall" and press Enter to apply and make this setting permanent

I have this router for a week ,and no problems, but yesterday its fell, the router its working fine, but the laptop who receives internet from my router via wireless its show it conected to internet, but I...

Make sure all the connections are secure. try plugging the laptop into the network cable directly and see if you can access a web page to verify that the laptop is working as it should. Try to connect a different device wirelessly to the router to see if the router is broadcasting as it should. Is the router broadcasting a SSID? Does the router have an antenna and is it attached correctly? Try to reset the router and connect.

When I connect my router to my modem, I cannot surf the net, nor can I access my router homepage. I have my modem in bridge mode, but I appear to have no connection.

I would set it up in 'router' mode. Bridge mode is for a specific application for an intranet (not internet).
Bridge Mode Router Mode Does not block any broadcast or multicast Blocks and provide protection against broadcast storms Transparent bridge and can pass Non-IP protocols Only IP protocol is supported PPPOE protocol Pass-through No PPPOE protocol pass-through Able to transport VLAN tagging Doesn't supports VLAN No network segmentation. One broadcast domain Network segmentation (Clients can be on different IP subnet) Can only relay the DHCP client's request to the external DHCP server Can Act as DHCP server & relay which Prevents IP conflict & DHCP Injection Bridges maintains bridging table (Mac) & STP can be used to avoid loops No STP feature; maintains routing table External bandwidth Controller can be used to control the speed of the clients by Mac or IP address External bandwidth Controller can be used to control the speed of the clients by IP only In client device, it uses MAC address to associate which requires WDS compatible AP Use SSID to associate, work with any 802.11a/b/g AP

Wont connect to the internet. And losing connection to the internet

Watch your signal strength while using the notebook. Do you have the same problems when you are close to wireless access point? If not then you may need reposition the router so it doesn't have to pass through many walls. IF you have other wireless devices such as cordless phones, etc. You may need to select a different channel for the router to broadcast on. Try using channels 1,6, or 11.

WRT54G2 wired desktop fine, can't connect to wireless.

Hi Seth6025,

Try without using Wireless Encryption (password).

Try changing channels; default is 6; try 1 or 11.
Change your SSID: personalize it
SSID broadcast: Enable

Check the advanced wireless settings and make sure MAC filtering - DISABLED.

Reset the Linksys router by pressing RESET for 30 seconds should everything fails and re-configure. Firmware is another consideration BUT this is just a new release.

Regards,

Angel

I have router and got to laptops connected to it just trying to add nother laptop to it that has got a belkiin wireless usb adapter and it wil not let me also i cannot rember my pass word for router

Reset your router to manufacturer's settings by pressing with a small pin the hole found at the rear of the router. It is labeled "reset".

When the router is reset to default setting, connect the router to a computer and visit http://192.168.1.1 (linksys router) or http://192.168.0.1 (d-link router) to configure it. By default, username = admin and password = <blank> or no password. If no password don't work, try the password "admin". So username = admin and password = admin.

You you reach the configuration field, you need to enter the configuration settings provided by your ISP to connect to their internet services. Most likely, you will be using a dynamic IP address (DHCP Enabled) for home users or a static IP for business users. But these information you can get from your Internet Service Provider.

Once you can connect to the internet, configure your wireless network in the router's configuration page to broadcast with encryption. Use WPA or WPA2 or the like in your encryption protocol. Make sure that you configure your laptop for WPA or WPA2 also for them to communicate.

When all is set, try connecting to the internet and try if your wireless router is broadcasting wifi internet.

Routers just supply Internet connectivity.
Is does not care if what device you are using.
