Question about Televison & Video

MITSUBUSHI WS-55819 REAR PROJECTION PICTURE WASHING OUT Attn:SDTech Recently the picture on our WS55819 started to wash out. The TV is approximately 8-9 years old. The picture will fade in and out intermittently. I am able to adjust the picture to "watchable" by lowering the brightness control increasing the contrast and color. When the picture does fade out it comes with some amount of convergence problem in that there are red highlights on the edges of things on the tv and the menu control screens look slightly misaligned but not to the extent of the examples given for convergence failures. Once the color comes back to normal I have to adjust the controls back to mid range... I had a repairman out and he told me he knew what the problem was and that it would be around 700 - 800 to fix it which I was ok with but that was three weeks ago so I am looking at other options. My remote was not working the day that he came but I found your post on how to repair it and sure enough it is working fine. Wondering what your thoughts are - should I repair or get new and from the symptoms that I have described is it something that I can fix or better to leave it to a professional. I bought the service manual on line so I have a better idea where everything is on the boards now but could really use your knowledge - Thanks in advance-

Hi

Thanks for using FixYa. From what you have described it seems that you have to replace the convergence IC and check power resistor for leakage, if values are not exact you have to replace them. The typical cost to get this fixed by a pro is about $300 not $700 or $800- and it doesn't mean that he/they will do a job better than you do as know you also have the service manual. The parts are less than $100 (about $20-$30 for the IC's) if you want to do it yourself. Replacing only the IC's MAY solve the problem; however, many people have also had blown resistors requiring replacement. Why would you ask should you replace both of the IC's if only one is shot?! If one is shot the other one is not far away and for that little price of the chips it worth changing them both at the same time. Also the convergence board should be checked for cracked solder. If you replace the ICs and the resistors are shot, the ICs may blow again almost immediately, meaning you may have to do the repair twice. Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or else revert for further assistance.

Thanks
Rylee

Your reference to concave picture suggests a high voltage problem and not convergence. If the raster can't scan from left to right , top to bottom, your having High voltage trouble. if your colors are not dropping on top of each other that is convergence. I would suggest it may be time to consider a purchase of the new HD set for the cost of this repair. good luck

Yes you will need to replace both of the STK392-570 Convergence ICs and the two 5 amp pico fuses. You can get the parts at the following link and they provide instructions with pictures that show how to do the repair. Heres the link'

Mitsubishi ws55819 has no picture

the pico fuses are 6.3 amp. any type pico fuse rated at 6.3 amp will do and the convergence ic's are labeled on the body of the ic. (STK 391-010 or similar). the board that the ic's are on can be removed without removing the entire tray. the connectors are marked and even different sizes to prevent miss-connection when installing board abain. be carefull removing the board as the screws holding it in also hold the heat-sink for the ic's as well as the shield for the generator module.
And do please unplug the set first!!
