Chances are that you have a bad faucet that is drawing water from a cold water tap. You will need to have a helper turn on the hot water in that bathroom while you feel the pipes at the water heater and see if they are heating up. If they feel like there is no flow, the water is coming from somewhere and you will need to turn the shut-offs of at various sinks to target the problem faucet. If you find which cold water line is acting up, install a back-flow check valve so the water goes only one way, toward the faucet.

No hot water from kitchen tap

The hot side of the faucet is most likely plugged with something that came up thru the water system. The average thankless waterheater requires at least 1/2 to 3/4 gpm flow rate for the unit to sense flow and turn on. If there is not enough flow it will not fire and heat the water. Not sure about this particular unit but a few require at least one full gallon per minute flow. So chances are that if you fix the faucet, you fix the hot water issue at the same time

You may have instant hots for the sinks, a small heater for each location which won't be on the tub. If there is a flame fail the hot water heater is not working. Check the flame sensor and ignitor.

Ask the plumber who did the mods. to come a check that he hasn't crossed a hot/cold pipe. Really sounds like he has, this would cause hot water to mix with cold. Is the water hotter further away from where he did his work? This would be a clue. Easy way to check is to turn off the water to the hot water system, should be a valve on the middle pipe going in to the heater. This should turn off all water to all your hot taps. If you still have water at any hot tap or shower then the pipes have been crossed.

Looks like your recirculation pump might be bad. If your opening a valve close enough to the heater and it comes on, It sounds like it's giving your pressure switch a false reading and allowing it to come one while the farther away you get, it is not enough line pressure to overcome the safety's of the heater.

My kids just bought an older home w/a rinnai continuum nc-45-4us. right now their house phone isn't installed, so they can't phone, but they can't turn on hot water. any suggestions

Run through the basic checks
  • Power lead from the heater plugged in a socket turned on.
  • Gas on to house
  • All valves below heater in on position.
  • If they have controllers in the house turn on (key pads marked with Rinnai logo in kitchen or bathrooms usually)
There is a turbine that spins in the heater when a hot tap is run. If the heater has been sat for some time not operating the turbine might have stuck. Run the hot tap and keep it running, using a hammer give the centre pipe connection under the heater a firm hit a few times(not too hard). This might unstick the turbine.

it sounds like 1(or more) of the motorised valves arent working.find the valve and make sure you are getting power to it via a tester,if so then it probably needs the head on the motorised valve changed

you don't have a circulating line in it,, there for it is pulling the hot only,, when you have the 2 systems you have to have it circulationg or take 1 out, it being it is hot water they will vapor lock,, meening no hot water , you could get a circulating pump that actually hooks to the cold and hot side under the sink far away from the water heater and it has a timer on it that will circulate the water at certain times of the day,,, this would solve your problem

Need to wire a zone control for a closed system with a circulator

thats because the rinnai does not have a set up for a circulating pump it would make the unit run all the time,, they are not designed to work that way,, you will have to just wait for the hot water to get to the faucet just like before,,don't let any one tell you there is a way once the water flows it turn on the tankless so it would never shut off, you could get on that goes on a timer on say the farthest fauset away from the unit and set the timer to come on like 2 min before you are ready to use the water in that bathroom in the morning or at night other then that there is nothing else you can do
