Question about Gateway MX7122 Notebook
The power button circuit board plastic cover is held by clips, and gets removed using carefully a small screwdriver under the hinge cover, after removing the screws at the bottom of the laptop. At least it worked this way on all the Gateway laptops with separate On/Off and button board that I have done. Ensure that you have removed batteries and disconnected power first.
See also instructions at page 43 of this manual.
Once the cover is out, the next step will be testing the switch, by either jumping contacts, or reading impedance. Reading impedance with power off is safer. When switch is pressed the circuit must close and open.
If the problem is the board, and not the button, then proceed removing keyboard, undoing board connector and screws, and replace the board.
More disassembly instructions on manual above.
