Good day,
The problem you have is the auto defrost system has failed. It is made up of 3 parts. Behind the rear panel in the freezer is a calrod defrost heater mounted to the bottom of the cooling coil.
In the same compartment is a small round disk about 1" in diameter clipped to the top of the same coil.
The third part is the defrost control which is mounted in the fresh food compartment in the roof area. It can be a standard timer or an adaptive electronic control, which turns on the main heater daily thru the small disk called a defrost thermostat.

You can check the main heater with an ohm meter for continuity.
The same for the defrost thermostat but must be tested when it is cold (below 30 degrees).

Below is a good tutorial on defrost systems.

http://www.appliance411.com/faq/howdefrostworks.shtml

In order of failure, the defrost thermostat is one, followed by the defrost control. The main heater can fail, but is a rare occurrence.

Please post back with any further questions.

when you had the back wall off how did the evaporator coil look?was the frost pattern even all over the coil or just on the top or bottom,if it didn't have an even frost pattern covering the whole coil you have a freon leak and will have to replace the machine.it will just keep getting warmer

The first thing to check is if you can hear the fan running inside the freezer. This not only keeps the whole freezer cold it alspo circulates air down to the refrigerator keeping it cool as well.

The freezer side does not freeze on the top shelf. The refrigerator freezes everything in the bottom but reads 47 degrees and doesn't cool the top shelves. The fan under the fridge runs fine.

Behind the back wall of the freezer about halfway down, probably behind the light bulb (if there is one there) there is a fan. My guess is that the fan isn't working, or is slow. To test, open the freezer door, then hold the door switch closed and listen for the fan.

This fan should be blowing air up the back of the freezer, and send some of the cold air through a vent at the top of the freezer into the fridge. The air then descends through the fridge and reenters the freezer through a vent at the bottom. If the fan is broken, or if the upper vent is somehow blocked or broken, the cold air will enter (rather than exit) the fridge side at the bottom vent. Because cold air tends to descend and warm air rises, the cold air will freeze the stuff at the bottom of the fridge, and the thermostat (at the top of the fridge) will say it is warm.

I purchased a bottom freezer Amana refrigerator when we built our house in 1999. The produce in the vegetable drawer keeps freezing! Everything else in the fridge is fine. Why does this happen?

Usually on bottom freezer fridges, there are two vents at the bottom of the freezer compartment where the cold air goes back into the freezer (cold air enters the fridge through the vent at the top/back of the fridge.)

If the vents at the back of the fridge are covered, the cold air will settle to the bottom of the fridge after it enters, and freeze your vegetables. The problem could be caused by ice build up in the evaporator coil of the freezer section also, but this will probably warrant a checkup from a pro.

One thing that can cause ice to build up inside those vents is moist air seeping in through a faulty door gasket. A thin coat of ordinary Vaseline on the gasket surface can help it make a better seal.

Upright freezer

If it has a fan in the freezer it need to be running to circulate the cold air.
If the coils are not icing up evenly from top to bottom you have a system low on freon.
The light frosting is normal.
A model number would really help to troubleshoot the problem.
