Question about Refrigerators
The problem you have is the auto defrost system has failed. It is made up of 3 parts. Behind the rear panel in the freezer is a calrod defrost heater mounted to the bottom of the cooling coil.
In the same compartment is a small round disk about 1" in diameter clipped to the top of the same coil.
The third part is the defrost control which is mounted in the fresh food compartment in the roof area. It can be a standard timer or an adaptive electronic control, which turns on the main heater daily thru the small disk called a defrost thermostat.
You can check the main heater with an ohm meter for continuity.
The same for the defrost thermostat but must be tested when it is cold (below 30 degrees).

In order of failure, the defrost thermostat is one, followed by the defrost control. The main heater can fail, but is a rare occurrence.
