Question about Rheem EcoSense by 7.4 GPM Tankless Water Heater Natural Gas High Altitude

1 Answer

My water heater is brand new. Last night was the first time we turned it on. I get a code 21 on the remote. I read that I need to clean the burner and the filter, but being new I can't believe that it is dirty. I remove the controller and the water heater work without problems. Where do I go from here?

Code 21, Check the Air Intake Filter switch, you can press that switch from outside. The filter cover may not be properly seated.

Code 11. had hot water last night

Code 11 is for no ignition.
Here is what I find:

Check that the gas is turned on at the water heater, gas meter, or cylinder.
Ensure gas type and pressure is correct.
Ensure gas line, meter, and/or regulator is sized properly.
Bleed all air from gas lines.
Verify dip switches are set properly.
Ensure appliance is properly grounded.
Disconnect EZConnect™ or MSA controls to isolate the problem.
Ensure igniter is operational.
Check igniter wiring harness for damage.
Check gas solenoid valves for open or short circuits.
Remove burner cover and ensure all burners are properly seated.
Remove burner plate and inspect burner surface for condensation or debris.

IF it has been working fine and now it isn't, I would suspect an ignitor problem.

Wont always fire up

You probably have tankless water heater.
What brand water heater?
Gas or electric?
Is this new installation or old installation?

For Rheem tankless:
Copy following link: If you get no error code on remote control, then scroll down to 'no error code.'

My Rheem tankless water heater has been flashing a C8 and 76 code. I can turn off the heater using the power button on the unit, but my hot water will only last for a shower or so. Any suggestions? ...

Before calling service technician, open following link for troubleshoot resources including Rheem chat and contact, possible manual, error codes, etc.:
http://waterheatertimer.org/Troubleshoot-Rheem-Tankless-water-heater.html

C8 76 is generally bad PC board. Call 800-432-8373
Just like a motherboard on your computer, the tankless PC board is operational center of tankless water heater.
Various sensors gather information from water pipes, gas line, vent pipe, and air supply to determine when to activate burner.
Most people understand that when their computer motherboard needs replacement, that computer will probably not work reliably again.

Tankless is basically connecting a complex computer to your plumbing and electrical lines and to a gas burner with a vent pipe to outdoors, despite knowing that plumbing lines, vent pipes, gas burners, and household electrical systems have plenty of problems on their own.

Age factor: When tankless is new and everything operates perfectly, the tankless works correctly.
And each tankless manual recommends yearly and monthly maintenance, just to maintain operation, the cost of which can exceed the expected 1-8$ monthly savings. And who wants to clean the water filter each month and delime the exchanger every year?
http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/Tankless-maintenance.pdf

Don't buy a tankless water heater because the only folks promising unlimited hot water and effortless water heating experience while saving money with a tankless are the tankless promotors.

Solve most tankless problems yourself, same day, any brand for about $350.

I am thinking of purchasing a Reliance water heater and notice that there are many complaints about pilots continually going out. Have these issues been addressed? I currently have a A.O. Smith which has...

I do water heater research for specific purpose.
I see complaints about every brand except the brands that are no longer in business
Most complaints about gas heaters involve burners & pilot.
Here are some things that might help you decide:

New water heaters have to meet regulations
for clean-burning and efficiency.
As a result, water heaters exposed to poor incoming air supply, and poor venting are more likely to be affected by chronic pilot light problems.

Bradford White manual I was reading said, to remove chemicals from same room as water heater. Chemicals corrode water heater parts. This would affect the pilot light as well.
'Spray propellants, cleaning solvents, refrigerants, swimming pool chemicals, calcium and sodium chloride, household bleach, waxes and process chemicals are corrosive at very low levels with no odor."

Yearly maintenance: you're supposed to clean burner and combustion area with a wire bush and vacuum each year.

The FVIR is another consideration today. Flammable Vapor prevention.
Consult the manual before buying the product.
Many gas water heaters have a screen located on bottom of water heater. When the screen clogs with dust, the reduced airflow will stop the burner. Unless the water heater legs are set on bricks, then you can't get under to clean the screen.
If the FVIR trips because it detected a flash-over condition, you have to buy parts for all water heaters except the Bradford White. BW has a re-settable FVIR.

Maintaining your water heater is important.
Look for a brass drain valve instead of plastic.

Anode rod.
If water heater has two anode rods, the tank will last longer.
Inspect anode rod every 3 years.
Loosen anode rod before installing tank so it will come out easily for inspection
Or if it has a powered anode rod, it will supposedly last 'forever' ... until the burner gives out.

My model 501, 30 gal, LPG water heater only makes warm water, is this fixable, or should I think replacement?

Look at the flame and see if it's burning blue or yellow. And then see if it's burning all the time. If the flame is yellow and water heater does not make hot water, the thermostat may keep the flame going all the time and use up your gas.

Poor flame color means you should clean the burner or replace the burner. If water heater is exposed to trace amounts of some chemicals, like bleach or pool chemicals or wax, these chemicals get pulled into the burner and will shorten life of burner assembly and combustion chamber.

If the flame is blue and the water is not hot, then the thermostat is the best suspect. The thermostat is part of the gas valve. The gas valve has a copper tube that extends into the water and reads water temperature. If thermostat reads incorrect temp, then the gas valve needs to be replaced with gas valve from local plumbing supply of Lowes.

If the flame is blue, and it runs all the time, then your tank may have a layer of sediment between the flame and the water, and the sediment has caused water heater to become very inefficient.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Clean-sediment-out-of-water-heater.html

Now to answer your question:
You can turn up the thermostat dial located on front of tank.
Check your flame and how often burner comes on to determine where problem is.
You can buy a gas valve from Lowes for $65 or from plumbing supply and then replace >> you need a couple wrenches and pipe joint compound and about half a day.
You can clean the burner with wire brush and shop vac.
Remove chemicals from same room as water heater.
If the water heater has sediment build-up, then a new water heater is probably best choice.

You can do some things yourself. If the do-it-yourself steps don't work, then get a new water heater, and you know more about maintaining a water heater because you worked on the old one. Save the new water heater manual. Read the manual because it has ordinary information that will save you money long-term.

You are actually getting a 90 error code. This error code occurs if the unit is dirty and overheating. I'd recommend contacting a servicer to clean your heater with compressed air. They'll need to remove the fan motor and manifold plate to fully clean the burner chamber and heat exchanger.

Gas hot water tank, pilot light

Look inside the water heater when it is heating the water, the flame should be blue. If it has yellow tips on the flame, it needs an adjustment to the air shutter. There is a nut on this air shutter to make this adjustment. This adjusts the air gas mixture. You may first try just simply tapping on the burner lightly to loosen any debris that may have built up and vacuum it out. MAKE SURE YOU TURN OFF THE GAS BEFORE CLEANING THE BURNER!! Also, check for drafts that may be blowing out your pilot light, Furnace register or outside drafts on windy nights. Some water heaters have an automatic shut down if the water heater gets too hot, so don't have it set to its hottest setting. Most water heaters only last about 10 years or so, It could be you are ready for a new one....Joe
