Question about Acer TravelMate 4101WLMi Notebook

2 Answers

Having probs coming out of hibernation and boot up. This is also intermittent as well. Suspect the connection from hard drive to motherboard. This problem continues even after change of hard drive and re-build. Tried having an inspection of the physical connections but very difficult to get at the area to see clearly. Tried getting local pro advice - twice - but not resolved. Any ideas please Gary

I do not recommmend using hibernation. I do know why they made this because it messes up everyones computer that uses that option. Go to control panel, display option, screen saver, then power options. Turn OFF hibernation, then just set your screen and Hard discs to turn off when you want them too. You do not need hibernation enabled to use these other options.

Check whether you have free space available for hibernate as mentioned in hibernate options in power settings. Also check whether any BAD sectors are there in HDD. run chkdsk /f in command line Or run scandisk.

***a black screen appears on my acer telling me... check cable connection! PXE-M0F: Exiting Inetel PXE ROM. No bootable device --

Sorry to hear that. It sounds like your motherboard is having trouble finding your hard drive. When the BIOS screen comes up, enter setup (I believe you press F2 for Acer motherboards). There should be an entry for boot order. Make sure that the hard drive is in the list and selected to boot. If it is in the boot order list and it still won't boot from it, your hard drive may have failed. Take it to a PC specialist and they should be able to recover the info from your hard drive.

Test your PSU or replace it if your power supply units fan is not working your PSU is faulty

One bad lead can cause a computer to continue on a cycle or to shutdown or fail to detect/ boot up a computer hard drive

Test all leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions,IDE,SATA

the leads from your ((motherboard to your hard drive)) make sure they have a secure connection and are not faulty or just replace them there probably old and faulty
make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty even the electrical extensions or just replace them they could be faulty a computer needs its connections to continue its cycle and have an end so any faulty leads will end up with a computer error hope this helps

I have a lacie big disk extreme + 2.0 TB. I am using Win XP Home. Recently, I have been having problems getting the drive to boot. According to windows, I have about 850 GB of drive space left, so I don't...

> is this a problem with ... my PC?

Try connecting the drive to a different PC.
If you have the same (intermittent?) problem, then it is NOT your PC which is at fault.

I suspect that your unit is about to _permanently_ fail.
Make a backup copy of all your files, before it does.

Then, exercise LaCie's warranty to get it replaced.

Hard drive not found and operating system not found

I would try booting from another device (flash drive, cd, or external hard drive). If you are able to do this, then you know that the problem is isolated to the motherboard's connection, to the cable connecting the hard drive and the motherboard, and/or to the hard drive itself. If you still cannot boot, the you may be having bigger problems. These problems could be with your BIOS.

Tecra m8 boot up problem

The true test here is, can it boot into the BIOS every time. If it can, then I suspect your getting ready to have a hard drive failure. Intermittent boot failures and non-start-ups are usually caused by a faulty hard drive. If it was your boot menu or boot loader, then it would never boot period. I would suspect the hard drive overheated and is damaged, or there are damaged sectors on the drive that contain some of your windows files.

My hard disk goes hang when it boots the bios and cannot detect it. but my hard disk is still running.

I have a similar problem with an 80 gb drive in a Compaq. I've isolated it to the cable or the connector on either the motherboard or the drive. Try unplugging the cable at each end, then plugging it back in. Reboot. If it finds it and works normally, you have 1) a bad hard drive cable 2) a bad hard drive controller socket on the MB (bad MB :-( ) or 3) an intermittent connector on the hard drive. 1 is easy. 2 and 3 are problems. Try a different drive and see if it boots reliably every time - if so, suspect the drive. If its the MB, probably time to UPGRADE.

Im having serious probs here

first, ensure that only one master hard drive is connected (also disconnect cdrom(s). Next, at startup press the key (DEL or F2) to BIOS screen. then make sure that only the master hard drive in position 1 is listed or choose AUTO detect. now reboot and report if any progress. If no further progress, then master hard drive has failed somehow, but to be certain, try that drive on another pc as a slave just to test spin-up.
