Hello,

This is not a clear cut problem.
Your audio drivers have not been installed.
Sometimes when you buy a new computer, it might come missing some device drivers.
These drivers come in the drivers installation CD, every new computer has this CD (or must have it).

Look for the drivers CD that came with your computer, it is normally a CD labeled with the name of your computer and sometimes has "device drivers" labeled on it.

When you get this CD, insert it in, select the Operating System that is currently installed on your computer, for example Windows XP, or Vista.

Then select the audio drivers and install. Remember to restart your computer after installation is complete. After this, your sound should be working, that should solve your problem of sound.

How ever, because your sound drivers were not installed, i am suspecting that your other critical drivers were not installed. For example your BIOS, Chipset and VGA drivers.
If you find these drivers in the installation CD, i would recommend that you install them.

If your computer did not come with the drivers CD, you can go to HP's website, go to the bottom of your page and select your product category, for example Desktops and Workstations, then click and enter your product number, then select your Operating System, then download the drivers.

Yes there has to be a configuration for the 5.4 surround sound... look if the hardware came with a CD to update the sound driver. or Check if the its correctly configured. on the control panel then click Sound, then depending what windows you have have to lookk for the configuration or properties area and configure as 5.0 or sorround etc.

I have a x-540 speaker system I brought today. Do I need a sound card to make it work with my pc. I hook it up/no sound.

A stereo computer system with resources to produce and record surround sound channels. Such surround sound channels are played or recorded using an audio card added to the computer system, which audio card controls additional speakers and/or microphones. Software for redirecting instructions from existing stereo application programs and sending these instructions to the existing audio device driver and the additional audio device driver is needed. Resources for processing the digital audio data for either extracting surround sound channels from two channel data provided by the application, or for encoding two sets of two channel audio data recorded by the two audio cards is also needed

Connect DVD Player to logitech X 540 Surround System

Bad connection on that one speaker, if you have tested the system with other equipment and it works thn you MUST have a bad connection INSIDE you DVD player. If your DVD had a whole channel out on your output amplifier I beleive then 2 speakers would not work so more than likely you have a bad solder joint inside system for DVD output
