Just like another post in this thread mentioned, your radio has a switch on it that, when set to the channel 9 setting will go to 9 automatically. Same with channel 19 if selected will always default to 19. Set this switch to either CB or NOR for normal operation and you will be able to select any other channel.

The orange wire goes to a fuse that is always on. That's how it remembers things when it is powered down.Like the clock on a Car stereo.

Hi larry, That is a normal ch 9 default on electronic channel changers. Small midlands/cobras also do that. Try taking the red/hot power wire loose and attaching it to a power source that is hot all the time. That way there will be power going to the radio with the key shut off and it should retain the last channel you were on.
Hope this is what you were looking for, let us know,, Mechanic

Just installed midland 1001z. When powered up, it sequentially flashes the channels (1,2,3,...etc.) over and over, but never stops so I can't tune it to a station. The exception is that when I flip the ch....

Well the CB you have should not cycle through channels like that for sure. It is not a progressive scan. Try messing with the channel 9/normal switch again. In rare occasions that switch will **** to the side just a tad. there is a PCB board inside that is responsible for the channels responding to the channel as the channel knob is turned. This board could be going haywire. If fooling with that switch does not take care of the issue then I would contact the person you got the Midland from immediately and have them get you one that works properly.

Can this radio be used in the mountains for emergencies? What is the range of this unit? What channel should I use for an emergency?

Channel 9 is the Emergency Channel for Citizen's Band radios. You'll probably have better luck tuning to a channel that you hear conversations being conducted on to get help though. If no conversations are heard, channel 9 is the place to go.

This radio produces the FCC maximum allowed 4 watt output power with fully charged batteries. The effective range can vary from as little as 1 or 2 miles to 20 or more miles, based on elevation, antenna and surroundings. Of course, if you are in a desolate area, where other people with CB radios are 50 miles away - having even a whooping 45 mile range won't cut it. Plus, they have to have the radio on when you are calling, too. The flexible antenna provided on many CB walkie talkies is about "poorest excuse" for an antenna going. Consider purchasing a better antenna if you're going to rely on the CB for help.

The same holds true for cell phones. If you're too far away from a tower to get service, people just 5 miles away won't know that you need help, unless you find them. What do you do? Have a back up plan. Call ahead. Is cell service available? Is your carrier (Verizon, ATT, etc. supported?) Are there government agencies that monitor specific radio frequencies? What other gear should you have before starting out? You should also arrange to leave a copy of your itinerary with someone. Set up predetermined times for contacting them - this way, should a contact time be missed, they will notice that you're missing and can take appropriate action.

Be smart - be safe!

What is the DW button/switch for on the Cobra 18 WX ST II?

It is dual watch. you can set it to have two channels monitored. like ch 1 and ch 13 it will flip between those two channels. but if you use say 6, 19, 26 along with another ch it will stay on the channel with the most noise. and you would have to turn up the squelch to compensate.

Get cops

typically you cannot "get cops" with a CB radio. Completely different frequency and broadcast method.

However, if local police departments monitor ch 9 which is known as the emergency channel, you can call on there for help. Not many police stations monitor it any more.

I have a Mod 75-830 installed in a BMW motorcycle. Each time the unit is powered down, it goes back to ch 9. is there a way for the radio to remain on a given channel?

The unit needs constant voltage to keep channel memory. So if you have it wired to accessory, every time you turn it off, it looses memory. You need to wire it to constant voltage, and turn it on/off manually.

New radio

Hi,

Assuming no hardware faults, start with the basics, on powering on the radio:
1. RG Gain max clockwise;
2. Ch 9/NOR to Normal;
3. Delta Tune to mid position;
4. CB/PA to CB;
5. Squelch to minimum counter clockwise;
6. Channel selector to desired channel.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.
