Question about Office Equipment & Supplies

1 Answer

I tried to backup my Hard drive last night and during the backup at approximately 87% through it an error 'a disc error was found - insert new disc ' was displayed. My problem is that I could not remove the existing disc to insert a new one. The only way I found to remove it was to cancel the backup. I thought I had a bad disc so I tried the backup again - the same thing happened. I formatted the discs first then ran the backup. I am using MEMOREX CD-R discs 700MB. Can you help me? Hello, Barbara.

You don't need to format the discs first. If fact, I wonder if the formatting may have caused problems.

Test your CD-R discs and disk drive by just trying to copy a file. If it works OK, you won't be able to use that disk again, since it's a CD-R.

If a simple copy doesn't work, then either you have a bad batch of CD-Rs or your disk drive is faulty or needs cleaning (use a disk head cleaner).

Also, try updating your backup software.

Hope this helps.

Hard Disc Drive Troubleshooting and Repair

Troubleshooting Hard Disc Drives (HDD)

Hard drives don't last forever and they commonly fail.

Indications that your HDD maybe be failing or has failed

- S.M.A.R.T. error
-Error on computer start up saying no boot device has been found
-Any other windows error that states in the error it is HDD related

Now if your HDD hasn't totally failed and you can boot into windows the first thing you want to do is backup all your important files to some form of storage that is not on the affect HDD

Their is still some hope the problem can be fixed many times in one or two ways

1. windows built in disk repair tool chkdsk
-open a command prompt by typing cmd into a run window the shortcut to open a run window is windows key + r

in the command prompt type chkdsk /r this will scan your hdd for any errors and attempt to fix them

2. The second way to try and repair the drive is by using tools provided by the HDD manufacturer to be able to do this you need to:

determine the maker of your HDD by opening your computer and looking at the label on the disk

find the hdd diagnostic utilities on the drive manufacturers website you will have to do this on a working computer then burn it to a cd

then boot the affected computer off the cd you burned and running the provided diagnostic utility

If neither of these works I hope you were at least able to save the important data off the affected computer, and in the future keep backups.
In this case you will have to buy a new HDD and reinstall the operating system, drivers, programs

hoped this helped

I have had to replace my hard drive on my pc how can i get my music back on to pc from my ipod and back into i tunes

Backing up your iTunes library to a CD or DVD To burn a CD (CD-R or CD-RW), your computer must have a compatible CD burner. To burn a DVD (DVD-R or DVD-RW), your computer must have a compatible DVD burner. Check in iTunes Preferences to see if a drive is compatible. See below for steps.
To create your backup disc
  1. Choose File > Library > Back up to Disc.
  2. Select the option you want from the resulting dialog and click Back Up.
  3. The two options you can select from are:
    • Back up entire iTunes library and playlists
    • Back up only iTunes Store purchases
Whichever of these two options you choose, note that you can also choose "Only back up items added or changed since last backup" to perform an incremental backup.
  4. Insert a blank disc (CD or DVD) into your computer's optical drive. iTunes will scan the disc and begin burning.
  5. Note: If the disc you insert does not have enough space to hold all of the content you will be backing up, a dialog will appear asking whether you wish to backup to multiple discs. You can click Data Discs to continue.
iTunes burns the number of items that fit on one disc and then asks you to insert subsequent discs to continue burning the remaining files. Don't eject a disc while a backup is in progress.
Spoken programs purchased from the Audible.com website are not backed up.
Discs you create using the iTunes backup feature can be used only to restore; they can't be played in a CD or DVD player.

Restoring from a backup disc
  1. Open iTunes.
  2. Insert your backup disc.
  3. iTunes will ask whether you want to restore from this disc. Click Restore.
Check drive compatibility
  1. Choose a playlist on the left side of the iTunes window.
  2. Click the Burn Disc button on the bottom right corner of iTunes.
  3. If the drive is listed, it's compatible.

Error loading operating system

What operating system? Windows? If so, what version? Linux? Mac?

It could be a corrupt system file or a corrupt section in the MBR of the drive. If you have critical data on the drive that needs backed up, then I recommend that you (from another machine of course) download a live cd version of linux to boot into along with an external usb hard drive. You can then mount your existing drive and copy your data to the external usb drive for a backup of data. I would recommend either PclinuxOS, Knoppix or Puppy Linux. Exit once backup is complete.

Next, boot your machine with either a restore disk received with the purchase of your computer, or if unavailable, boot to a system disk of your current operating system (such as windows xp, etc.). This MIGHT require a fresh install of the operating system - thus the reason for doing a backup of data first. If however, there is a bad sector in the drive's MBR then you're ultimately looking at replacement of the hard drive and then performing a restore or a fresh install of the operating system.

If you find this solution to be helpful, then please take a moment to rate this post. - Thanks.

The majority of these PCs have a recovery partition on the internal hard drive, here is the instructions for using it.
Recovering information using Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE)
Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) can perform a recovery from either an optional external hard
drive or from recovery discs.
CAUTION: Using Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) will completely erase hard drive contents
and reformat the hard drive. All files you have created and any software installed on the computer will
be permanently removed. When reformatting is complete, the recovery process will restore the operating
system, as well as the drivers, software, and utilities from the backup used for recovery.
To initiate recovery using WinRE, follow these steps:
NOTE: This process will take several minutes.
1. If possible, back up all personal files.
2. Restart the computer, and then press f8 before the Windows operating system loads.
3. Select Repair your computer.
NOTE: The "Repair your computer" option is displayed only if the WinRE partition is intact. If the
option is not displayed, refer to “Recovering information using a Windows Vista operating system
DVD (purchased separately).”
4. Follow the on-screen instructions.
5. Click Next.
6. Select your user name, type your password (if applicable), and then click OK.
7. If you are using recovery discs, insert the last disc of the recovery disc backup set.
NOTE: Inserting the last disc of the backup set confirms the presence of a valid backup. If you
insert any other disc, the backup will not be recognized.
– or –
If you are using an optional external hard drive, connect it to the computer.
8. Click Windows Complete PC Restore.
9. Follow the on-screen instructions.

this is getting long , so ill will post more steps in comment.....

Disk error searching for boot rercord from CDROM not found

Hi rmirish,

The hard drive has built in SMART diagnostics to check itself to make sure all is well. If the SMART is showing status BAD then the hard drive is either either starting to go out. Your best bet is to try to backup any data (if you have any) on the hard drive and replace the hard drive.

Hope that helps,

Take care,
