Question about Canon EOS 400D / Rebel XTi Digital Camera

1 Answer

I got error cf after shooting about 20+ pics on a new card. I formatted the card & it works again (i didn't format it to start with). Is it my fault for not formatting the card to begin with? Or would you return the card? I'm worried about losing more pictures. Should I be? Thanks

Always be sure to format your card in the camera, and not in your computer. That ought to take care of it!

Error 20 didn't show up on a 50D error code search, however I've run into this before when the processing operation couldn't be completed meaning the memory card was corrupt.

The Canon 50D makes massively large files and several things can run you into problems the first I doubt but need to list and that is you are using a card with a slow write speed. Another is that you have been using that trash can icon and not formatting your memory card. The trash can deletes files yes but it leaves what I cal a residue (small amount of data) do this enough and your card fills with useless data. Still looking at the memory card, you possibly downloaded pictures to the computer and formatted the card in the computer, not a good thing to do. Error 20 is also a windows error code for corrupt files which will play havoc with your camera firmware.

Another possibility is you downloaded picture files to your computer and forgot to do a safe disconnect, eject or safely remove device what ever your camera computer uses for shut the device off before disconnecting.

After downloading your just placed the memory card back into the camera and maybe started shooting again with a "dirty" card. The correct practice is to format your memory card every time you have had it connected to the computer. Format not delete, format the memory card in the camera it is to be used in.

Clean up the card and your problem will go away. Error 20 is a processing problem, corrupt file(s) or a camera firmware problem. If the problem continues do a firmware update to your camera through the canon site it's free

When I insert the CF card, and then turn the camera on, I get a reading that the card needs to be formatted. I then try to format the card, and it says that the card cannot be formated. I looked inside,...

If trying another card doesn't work then reformat your CF card in your computer choosing a Quick Format option. Then place it in the camera, do an immediate card format in the camera. If you've got images on the card now DO NOT SHOOT ANYTHING on the card before running an image recovery program like Sandisk RescuePro. As long as you don't shoot anything new on the card RescurPro should recovery all the existing images.

I get a memory card error even though it has a card installed

Issue: Memory card Error
Solution: Try a different memory card and/or Reformat memory card PowerShot A70

Formatting a CF Card You should always format a new CF card or one from which you wish to erase all images and other data.
caution_a70.gifPlease note that formatting a CF card erases all data, including protected images and other file types. Please check the contents of the CF card before formatting it.
  1. Turn the power on.

  2. Press the <MENU> button and select [ tools_icon.gif(Set up)] using direction_arrow_lt.gifor direction_arrow_rt.gif.

    format_menu_1.gif

  3. Select format_icon_a70.gif(Format) using direction_arrow_up.gifor direction_arrow_down.gifand press the <SET> button.

    format_menu_2.gif

  4. Select [OK] using direction_arrow_lt.gifor direction_arrow_rt.gifand press the <SET> button.

    format_menu_3.gif

    • To cancel formatting instead, select [Cancel] and press the <SET> button.
    • The capacity of the CF card displayed after formatting will be less than the rated capacity of the CF card. This is not a malfunction of the CF card or camera.

  5. Press the <MENU> button.
note_icon_a70.gif
  • If the camera does not work properly, the inserted CF card may be malfunctioning. Reformatting the CF card may solve the problem.
  • When a non-Canon brand CF card is malfunctioning, reformatting it may solve the problem.
  • CF cards formatted in another camera, computer or peripheral device may not operate correctly. When that happens, reformat the CF card with this camera.

Im getting an Error 99 on my EOS-300D Digital Camera when I turn off my YN 465 Speedlite flash gun (still mounted) and then I start shooting manually without the flash. Help please, its a bit annoying, but...

To fix this err99 issue, do the following
1. Turn off the camera. 2. Remove the lens, battery, and CF card. 3. Allow the camera to sit without power for approximately 20 minutes. 4. Insert a fully charged battery, and turn on the camera.
If it appears again, then proceed to next steps 1. Turn off the camera. 2. Insert the CF card. 3. Turn on the camera. 4. Format the CF card in the camera.
If you still get the error you should send your product to canon for servicing.

Err CF then Err 99 - Canon Rebel XT / Hitachi 4GB Mircodrive

Nope, this is not card anymore.

As you know CF is card failure, sometimes this cause to start error 99 , that is lens error , even if there is no problem with the lens.

This happens because the built in software in the camera can get messed up after an error CF.

You fix the problem calling Canon, they will guide through upgrading the firmware in your camera.

First ensure that you are using the camera menu and command to format the new card, and that new cards are properly inserted into the machine.

Call Canon support to get a firmware upgrade.

Sony Alpha 100 gives error message when attempting to take pic.

Hi! I just had the same problem with my Sony A100, when I tried two different CF cards. I was getting the same error message as reported above: "Unable to use card" then "Format?" then that format fails. Thinking the camera is broken, I checked online camera repair sites and also called Sony directly. Sony's flat rate, and that of PrecisionCamera is $228 to fix CF card failure. Then my daughter said, "the CF card in my room works fine in the camera" - and lo and behold - it does. The CF card that works is brand PQI and is marked Hi-Speed 60 2Gb. The cards that do NOT work are marked SanDisk Ultra II 1.0Gb and SanDisk 128 Mb. So my advice is, before you give up on the camera as broken, try a number of different CF cards first.

The second cause of CF failure is if someone has pushed a CF card in the wrong way. That can bend one or more of the tiny metal contact pins in the CF socket in the camera. Look carefully to see that all the pins are straight up. [I don't know how one can straighten these pins, or if the whole socket would need to be replaced...but at least you can determine the cause of the CF failure.]

Best regards - Michael
