Question about ASUS P5NSLI (0610839134670) Motherboard

1 Answer

One drive is working correctly. I temporarily removed the other RAID drive (RAID 1 mirror) to test it. Now I do not understand which drive will be copied to which when thr array is re-built

My Mac no longer recognizes the drives

Raid 1 mirrors the disks, but they are still in an array. You need to identify which disk of the two failed. Replace the bad one and let the unit rebuild the raid if it can. This could take hours. Independently, I have not found them to work alone. They need the built raid array. I lost a ton of pictures on a 4 drive raided array that lost one drive, even though they were raided mirror.
Best bet is to see if your manufacturer will guide you through the diagnostics and procedures to restore the array for that unit.

Confuguring raid5

Hi

You would need 4 Hard disk drives in total. you would need to create 2 RAID 0 (striping) and then Mirror them (RAID 1). to elaborate, HDD A&B will be at RAID 0 as well as HDD C&D. after, you would have to Mirror your two RAID 0. (raid 0+1 is also known as raid 5)

Hope this helps.

Dell XPS w/Mirrored drives. No C drive when using boot disk.

As RAID uses block for block copy, a re-sync when adding in a new mirror on RAID 1 will take some time, and system performance will be affected during that time period. There is no indication in windows if the rebuild is complete as this is being done on a hardware level by the controller. Both Raid 5 and RAID 10 have added benefits , but alos require more storage (a lot more in case of RAID 10 as you will have effectivly 3 spares for 1 data.) Raid 5 has the best space/protection pay off, but will be slightly slower than both RAID 1 and RAID 0 as parity has to be calculated for each write. As caffineshark states your best option is to use a combination of the methods we have described:

1) Use the two SATA disks as RAID 0 for performance and reliability.
2) Make backup images of the boot volume using Drive Image / Ghost and store on external USB IDE drive, and then offsite.

If you make an image in the USB drive, make sure you run a verfiy of the image after creation to make sure it's valid.

This should allow you to restore in a DR sutuation, but also give you some decent HDD crash protection.

I have hp proliant with raid 1+0 .I have 2 hard and usr in option

Sometimes shortened to RAID 10, RAID 1+0 is a particular combination of two different RAID levels: mirroring (RAID 1) and striping (RAID 0). The appeal of RAID 1+0 is simple: mirroring gives you the highest level of availability RAID offers, with the fastest rebuild times when a disk fails; while striping - using the proper chunk size - is the basis for high-performance I/O.

Switching from 'Mirrored' to 'Striping'?

I don't understand your description. sorry. But if you are switching over from Mirror to stripping then you will surely loose your files. Switching raid configuration will also redo the hard drive relativity and will reformat the drives automatically. If your backup is a server then you need to go to system bios and configure the raid from there. I suggest backup the backups first before you do it. If your backup is an external hard drive then go to its http settings and configure it there. It will surely format your drive.

It appears you have made an error with the RAID configuration. RAID 1 is mirroring and requires an EVEN number of drives unless one is a hot spare. Also, RAID 1 is for redundancy and is slower than a single drive or RAID 0. Verify your RAID configuration and make sure you have RAID 1 and not RAID 0 or RAID 5 which can be an even or odd number of drives.

Problem with creating array

The Perc RAID controller in a 2600 doesn't support RAID 4.
You can do RAID 0, RAID 1 and RAID 5.

With 3 HDD's your best bet would be a RAID 5.

Mirroring is RAID 1 (which would only use 2 of the drives)

Different RAID configuration?

Hi,

The first point to note is that this unit does not support more than 1.6TB total disk. (4 x 400GB drives) This is stated in the manual which is on the CD that came with the unit. You cannot configure a mix of RAID1 and Linear (JBOD) drives, so you plan will not work.

How to make raid 10 with Tyan M7902?

Yes. Unless you're using HP-Ux's LVM or some other Logical Volume Management software package, the controller can only perform mirroring on the same channel. I see no value in running Raid 10... all it does is strip the mirrored data on the 2nd set of disks. It uses the same overhead as mirroring and offers minimal benefit with the potential for more overhead in slowed bandwidth. Make it simple and just mirror the drives with Raid 1.
