This error usually occurs when you are attempting to use a disc from a different region the player is compatible with, OR the player cannot read the type of disc you have inserted - this is common when trying to play video on burnt DVD or disc media. Some discs are very low quality or some players are not compatible with certain brands of blank discs.

When any DVD player stops reading commercial disks, there are only two things you can try to solve the problem:

  1. DVD lens cleaner. This is a disk that has small brushes on it that will gently wipe away any accumulated dust or debris that's on the lens that allows the player to read the disk.
  2. Resetting the player. Some players have a reset procedure that can correct issues that stop the player for working correctly. If the procedure is mentioned in the manual, contact the manufacture to see if one is available for your model.
If neither of these suggestions work, the player needs to be repaired. Since some brands will pay for your repair even if you're out of warranty, especially if they've heard of your problem before and it's a known issue, you should always contact the manufacture first for your full range of options. If they're willing to fix the player for free, or at a reduced cost to you, let them!

Whenever a DVD or CD player stops reading or loading disks, it means that something has gone wrong with the disk reading mechanism inside or a circuit connected to the mechanism. These days it isn't normally practical to consider repair unless you're in warranty because the labor cost alone will normally exceed the value of most players on the market. If the part is available and you're able to install the part yourself, you'd have to properly diagnose the part needing to be replaced which means being familiar with the brand and their service techniques. Unless you paid more than $150 for that unit, if the manufacturer isn't willing to fix it for free or for a small labor charge, it's time to look for a new player.

I hope I've provided you useful assistance and that this information allows you to make an informed decision as to how to proceed from here. Please be sure to vote on my response. I hope I've earned a good rating from you today!

Please post a comment if you need additional assistance so that I can help you further.

Just bought a used Emerson TV with dvd combo. 19". Keeps reading disc error playback feature not available

You may be trying to play a DVD with the wrong country code or if you made the DVD on a computer , the DVD is not session closed. If that's the case, you can run the DVD software and close the session. DVD's will play on a computer without closing the session but will never play in any other player.

Try reloading the driver for dvd player burner. If this does not work try downloading the "read program" for the specified dvd drive.

DVD will not play disc

You need to find a good dvd cleaner and clean that real well run it a couple of times that should fix your problems. If not you may have to bring it in and get the optics cleaned by a professional. But I am confident if you get a good cleaning disk it should fix it, Happy Holidays
