If your xbox wont read the disc, it just says open tray, there is a very simple solution i discovered. You dont need to do anything complicated or fancy, simply make sure everytime you turn your xbox off the disc is out. Turn your xbox on without a disc in, let it get to your profile screen, then put the disc in. Works every time.

This is the perfect solution. I would like to cast a vote to put this at the top of the page. Thanks for the input!

  • maw_4 Oct 03, 2010

I wouldn't say it works every time. I have never left a disc in my xbox before turning it off, so obviously I've turned it on without a disc in it. I've let it go to my profile screen and put in a disc - still doesn't read it. All it says is open tray and makes a slight humming noise. I think I might try lubricating the two bars that laser runs along. Praying this will work especially with Halo Reach out now.

The unit needs to have the laser reader lens cleaned but DONT use regular rubbing alcohol.
Get pure stuff....the rubbing type leaves a glare on glass and plastic lenses.
Also ,the chrome rails that the laser moves along need to be cleaned and lubed with liquid silicone.
This method clears read problems most of the time.

I would just like to say that these other solutions are an obvious money making scheme and unnecessary. Not only are they telling people it's okay to pull apart their Xbox 360 (It's clearly not), but they're advertising products people would have to go buy in order to fix their problem.
Well there is a better solution that was posted here 5 months ago. So I will post it again to let more people know.
BEST SOLUTION:
Simply make sure when you turn your console on or off that there is no disc inside.
Turn it on without a disc.
Load your profile.
Put a disc in and get ready to play.
When you're done take your disc out and then turn off the console.
It's just that simple.
Give it a try.
See for yourself.
Sincerely,
Crookid Fingaz

I had the same problem wouldn't read game disc but would read dvds. the error message i got was insert an xbox game to play when there was an xbox game in, also i when i closed the tray it would say reading then say open tray. I managed to fix mine.
Please be aware you will have to open up your xbox and in doing so will viod your xbox so please check if you still have it under garuntee first!!

HOW I FIXED THE PROBLEM
first i opened up the xbox and took the dvd drive out.
Then i opened up the dvd drive and replaced the laser for a new 1, but still didnt work, so the next thing i tried was putting the old laser back in and lubricating the 2 bars that the laser runs along ( i used vasleen) any lubrication will work. Time to test it, bingo worked striaght away everytime, no problems since, I think the fualt it that the lubrication on the bars wear off and the laser gets stuck. Give it a tried and let me know how you get on

you have to open your xbox and find the lense the VERY carfuly wipe the lense with the cotton but.
when u have finnished put a dis in and put the little weight on the disk and try to boot it up it should work.

if it dont then u will need to get a new drive (laser) i got a psare and repair xbox and changed them over

I spoke with Microsoft about this issue and they offered me the solution.

You will need to access the storage device or devices from the Console Settings. When you have the device (eg: Flash Memory, Hard Drive, etc) You will need to access the device system files by pressing Y.

Once in the drives system files, you will need to clear the cache for this/these device/devices 3 times. Once the cache has been cleared, power down the unit and unplug the following:
- Power
- Video

Wait 5 minutes and plug these back again. The device should be able to read disks on boot-up. You will also notice a slight improvement in performance as well. =)

Cheers!

Three options.

1. Replace the laser inside the CD Drive.

2. Replace the CD Drive.

3. Get some rubbing alcohol and some q-tips. Wet the q-tip with rubbing alcohol and start cleaning the laser eye with the q-tip. Put a tincy-wincey bit of pressure on the lens but not too much when cleaning it. Then clean up the excess rubbing alcohol with a dry q-tip. Then put the CD Drive and the Xbox back together.

Pull it apart mate! (don't be shy) use the same stuff that to clean LCD or plasma TV's, clean lens use cotton bud OR swab. clean the rails spotless use Vaseline to lube em up again. my DVD just bombed out i am afraid my previous pott tweak might have eventually killed it.

PULL IT APART! you wont hurt it unless you do something stupid.

Here is a Quick Guide to help you.

you will need torx screw drivers can't remember the size though.
turn your xbox upside down remove all the rubber feet to expose the torx screws there is one hidden under a sticker there somewhere. undo them all and set aside where you will not lose any! next separate the two half's of the shell to expose the guts now there are two tray's on the left is your DVD drive and on the right is your HDD remove the screws holding the two trays together there are a few. now you should be able to remove the drive just unplug everthing from the back of it (just remember where everything goes) now dismantle your DVD drive take the top plate off by removing the screw around the sides this may or may not require a bit of force but it will come loose from there you should be able to perform alot of general maintenance not just to your DVD drive but tou your whole xbox. clean it right up. and while your at it install a chip then get a bigger HDD etc.. etc.

3 options

1. Get a lens cleaner CD.
2. Get a new drive.
3. Replace the lasers there are inside the CD Drive or replace the CD Drive.

I hope that will help you.

Crookid, it is people like you that make people not want to participate in forums. I am a 6 year Microsoft tech. Just so that EVERYONE is aware, every option given in this forum to date is a viable option EXCEPT for the one that Crookid promotes. If you start your console without a disc, and it works, it is not a magical fix. It simply means your driver is on its way out, and it is a hit or miss that it will read. Aside from letting a professional fix it(we have to eat too...) Cleaning, and lubing is your best option. Also you can get a new dvd drive for between 20 and 40 dollars, with many tutorials online to show the simplicity of replacement. I suggest calling Microsoft first, your warranty may still be active.

  • jprotege Dec 13, 2010

Well, just so you know Anthony, his solution works ever time I get this issue. Never had to bring my xbox to a store, buy any cleaners or other garbage, nothing.

Like you said, you techs need to eat, so I can understand you promoting the method that will make you the most money.

I understand you are proud that your method works crookid but you don't have to be rude to let people know. And by the way your behavior reflects on ***********. Just sayn.....

What do you do when your xbox won't read disks?

The main problem might be a big problem with the disk tray. There might be an faulty wire that has lost connection and if your disk wont event turn on, there might be a problem with the power supply that supplies the cd tray. If the disk opens and closes but doesnt read and wont say tray is in and keeps saying open tray, there might be a small fracture on some of the wires or there is something wrong with the motherboard of the xbox 360. The best way is to buy the warrenty now and send it to the xbox 360.

Xbox 360 Pro : To Play This Disk Error

Unfortunately , a new xbox360 game cant be played in a normal xbox (not xbox 360)

The problem is that the new xbox is way different on the inside than the original xbox is. Because it is way more powerful, you can put an old xbox game into a 360, and it will work fine (most of the time), but if you try the reverse there is no way to make it work.
