Pull the memory card out and verify the card lock switch has not been moved to the lock position.

SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks it, enabling writes. If the slide is already in the correct position, slide it fully the other way and then back.

If that doesn't work, try a different card.

I get the message 'protected card' Next trick?

There are several possible causes for "memory card locked/protected", "memory card error", or "no memory card". The most common cause is having the tiny slide switch on the side of the card in the wrong position. The second most common is trying to use a 4GB or higher SDHC card with an older camera made before SDHC format came out. There are also other common causes if the above didn't help, with troubleshooting steps for this problem listed here.

I am getting a message saying protected card cannot take pics

Check the memory whether the lock ( a small switch on the memory card) is activated. If so deactivate it.

Hi there and welcome to FixYa.

Check your card, there is a little switch on the side of the card. One side says locked and the other side says unlocked. Move the switch to unlocked and put it back in and try it again.

Look at the memory card and see if there is a write protect switch on in.  if there is then change the setting

Memory card says it write protected

Make sure the SD card lock is 'off' and then use thin, opaque sticky tape (ie non see-through; eg insulation tape) to cover the whole gap but keep clear of the metal contacts at the back.
The mechanical lock switch accidentally moves to the "locked" position during insertion due to the poor quality of the switch.
