Question about D-Link Xtreme N DIR-655 Wireless Router

1 Answer

We just bought a new emachine, Acer E627, with windows 7. I cannot connect it to our home network using a D-Link DIR-655 router. It has always worked fine. Other computers can connect to OUR network, we have wireless computer downstairs, it connects, no problem. I went to a local coffee house with free internet and it worked fine!! The emachine sees our network, but won't connect. All the bars showing the network strength are green, the signal is very strong, I can even see my neighbors network. If I type in the wrong Pre-Shared Key, I can't leave this dialog box. So, everything seems good here, except the emachine cannot connect to our network. Error message is Windows was unable to connect to the network. Trouble shooting dialog box does not identify the problem. I manually setup the emachine with the info from the D-Link admin areas, it shouldn't be this hard! Various Info: D-Link DIR-655 Firmware Version: 1.02 Hardware Version: A1 emachine has: Microsoft Virtual WiFi Adaptor Model: Broadcom 802.11g Network Adaptor Settings 802.11 Mode : Mixed 802.11ng, 802.11g and 802.11b (the new emachine supports 802.11g) Security Mode : WPA- Personal WPA Mode : WPA2 Only Wireless settings I type in on the new emachine Wireless Network Name: THE Network Encryption: WPA2-PSK/AES Pre-Shared Key: qwerty11 Do we need a windows 7 updated driver for the Microsoft Virtual WiFi Adaptor in the emachine? If so can I get the link?

WPA is not very stable and I have seen many problems with this. Simply change router setting to be configured with WEP and use a good strong password in hex 0-9 and a-f . WPA is horrible any way, and who the heck is gonna sit out side your home to hack it? It is not a WIN 7 problem but more like aging encryption.

SOURCE: Dir-655 works with XP and Mac which can connect

Go to and login. Then go for the 'Setup' tab on the top and look for the 'Wireless Settings' tab on the right.
You can now automaticly setup your WLAN connection and afterwards you can go to the 'Manual Wireless Network Setup'. Over there you can change the 802.11 mode.

  • 802.11b only
  • 802.11g only
  • 802.11n only
  • Mixed 802.11g and 802.11b
  • Mixed 802.11ng and 802.11g
  • Mixed 802.11n, 802.11g and 802.11b

Go for the last one that uses n,g and b and you will be sure your computer can connect :)
Good luck!

I have bought a d-link dir-655 router. Trying to install it now. I do not have a CD-room.. Trying to enter the router by typing in the url-window in Firefox (also google crome), but...

You must be on the same network as the Router is your computer only connected to the Router ( with lan cable ) if so what is the IP address on your computer. If you are on the same network as the router the computer should have the IP address if not check if your computer has DHCP in the properties for the netcard, and change it to DHCP if it is not and then restart your computer and try again. I hope this will work.

I have a DIR 655 D Link router and I can't save changes.

Lots of possibilities, especially if the wireless device and your PC are older - the DIR 655 doesn't support wireless protocols 802.11 a and b, for example, only the newer g and n.
Start with getting the router software up to date (see )
using an Ethernet link to a PC, and then debug the wireless access. The DNS message could be caused by the Windows wireless adapter config having a manual IP address vs the router being set for DHCP (dynamic) or vice versa.

Problem with DIR 655

On the laptops, check that your Internet is set to use "Private" networks as opposed to "Public". Private networks allow others to see you and you to see others on the network, once you've entered the proper pass phrase as set up in the router's software. Your Manual for the router has the instructions you need to complete this process.
