Presario 2100US not powering up

My sister in law's presario was booting up when suddenly a message popped up and she hit enter and next thing we know it is going into hibernation. Repeated attempts to boot it up failed as it now does not even power up, The battery light shows on but none of the other lights are coming on.

How do I proceed?

How to reset a harddrive?

To restore your HP laptop back to the factory default, boot up with the Recovery CD and follow the on screen instructions.
If you do not have a recovery CD for your model laptop then you can get one from the HP WEB site.

Boot into recovery mode from GRUB menu, at the prompt, change user password again to something easy to remember.

passwd user
Then, change the ownership/permission of /home/user/.dmrc to you won't get that error/ignore message the next time you log in.

chown user:user /home/user/.dmrc
chmod 644 /home/user/.dmrc
Now reboot.

shutdown -r now

On my Compaq Presario 2100US my screen has started going black intermittently while running. I then have to power it down using the power button because I can't see the screen to shut it down properly. ...

  1. Remove the battery & switch on the PC in AC mode.
  2. Check if battery charging indication or AC power on indication is glowing. if not then need to change ur motherboard.
  3. If indication is OK, but could not power ON then check ur RAM for any loose connection or dust. clean & reinstall.
  4. If still no display, connect an external monitor, check if display is comming.
  5. If Display is coming then your LCD need to replace.

Note that the F8 button must sometimes be pressed within a .5 second timeframe. You can either keep trying and rebooting or use the following site: For Windows XP, try this: http://netsecurity.about.com/cs/windowsxp/qt/aaqt_safemode.htm The same may also work for Vista. I hope this helps, Yannick

PRESARIO 700 ERROR ON BOOT Hello! Every time when I switch on my presario 700, on the screen show: ERROR PCI on motherboard, device 09, F1(boot) and F10 (setup). OS is XP pro. What is wrong?

If you know how to set up the bios hit f1, if not hit f10, it will boot up and you will need to reset the time and date as they will be wrong. The PCI error refers to a PCI slot, which for some reason isn't functioning properlly. If you run the disk with your motherboard settings that may have come with your motherboard it may just be a driver. If you hit f1 then you will be in the Bios screen. There the keyboard is used to navigate. The mouse won't work, Arrow keys for up down and side to side, and the escape key to get out of a menu or menu item, and enter to select an item. So on the first screen, you will need to adjust the date, time, and year. each time you do this you must hit enter to proceed to the next item. once you get all of the settings right hit f 10, and enter to reboot. So I gave you both ways. If you still have the problem, check the cards that are in your motherboard, there may be a loose one, also try to pop out the battery inside the case, not the laptop battery, if it continues to happen, you may have to pop that little battery that controls the settings for startup, it will reset your saved motherboard startup settings, and once in a while the battery may be bad, which can also cause the kind of problem you describe.

My HP Compaq Presario v2000 has new mobo, new CPU

You probably put more than a pin-head size drop of heat grease compound on CPU, thus "bleeding" over on the CPU, effectively overheating processor (very common). In any event, your problem is overheating -that's *the* place to look for now.

If there is a cancel button with the password prompt, hit cancel without entering a password, or hit enter without entering a password. Sometimes if there was a password, even though there may not be a password currently, the system will still prompt for one, if you enter a password then it locks. The other things you can try is: At start up, hit the F8 key and go into safe mode, log on under the administrator and clear any user passwords in the user accounts. You can also try, at start up, entering the bios or utility set up and check to see if the bios password setting is enabled, then disable it. Rarely, but on occasion, a hard drive will fail and cause the password prompt. If this is the case, then the hard drive will need to be replaced.
