add some solvent to the self timer (a few drops) and turn the camera around in circles for a minute with the lenses horizontal only the shutter will work. do this for a week everyday until it is freed up without using solvent again. this shutter will last you a few more years before it starts sticking again

I'd recommend visiting a local camera repair shop, otherwise you could damage the camera permanently.

My olympus sp-590uz will turn on but then act like it is frozen. I can't focus or shift to menus

I don't have an answer but I have had this problem too. I think it has something to do with the zoom/shutter control. Something broke on this and the camera can't be revived unless you shut it off and on again. I was in the Montparnasse cemetery in Paris when this happened and I suspect I might as well have buried it there.

Frozen shutter

The usual cause of this is a failure of the motor in the SQ unit that drives the mirror up and down, operates the aperture lever, and charges the shutter. This parts is so notoriously bad that it is on permanent back order at Nikon

Some of the other solutions with popped shutter blades - usually when I see this it is caused by the customer trying to clean his image sensor and having the shutter blades close on his/her tool.

I have a Minolta X-370 camera that will not advance the film. Lever seems to be frozen.

The shutter is already wound and the shutter is not releasing.
You may have bad shutter release capacitors if the batteries are good.

Half the lense shutter will not close

It might need cleaning. You can try these:

1. Start and shut down the camera a few times to see if it shuts down itself.
2. If that didn't help, try this: you should be able to see the edge of the shutter if you look carefully towards the corner from where it was supposed to drop down. Get a pin or a needle, get a grip on the edge of the shutter with the pointed end and pull it down.
3. Clean it - Get a lint free cleaning cloth, dampen it with a lens cleaning solution and wipe the surface of the shutter. When still wet, start and shut the camera a few times. Repeat step 2 if required.

Your question is not much clear. When the camera shut off?? eg, after pressing shutter, etc. Did you use original battery?? What is your camera age?

Your camera might be have on/off button problem.

I had experience this with my coolpix 8xxx (could not remember exact model). The problem is with nikon on/off switch and shutter design. After a few years of usage, then the on/off switch with start losen a bit. These will cause autofocus activated without you pressing the shutter yet, and it will shut off without warning.

There is no DIY solution for this problem. For temporary, try your luck with pressing the on/off swith a bit harder. But that is for temporary + a bit of luck. Best solution is to send the camera to Nikon Centre.
