If its a" flat cord" what-ever color jacketed 3 wire cord, the 2 outside wires are your 2 hot power wires they go to L1 and L2 on your dryer, the center is the N neutral wire and goes to the N terminal, usually the L1 and L2 are a gauge larger than the neutral: HINT: the center is normally neutral on both the cord and machines terminal board in the back of the dryer, there usually is a diagram on the dryer on how to install the input power at the place you hook up power

Trying to replace a 3prong plug with a 4prong plug

Ok, so you currently have a three prong cord on your dryer? Your house has a 4 prong receptacle? Ok so now you've purchased a 4 prong dryer pigtail? Be sure cord is unplugged. Remove cover of junction in back of dryer. You will see three terminals. They should be labeled something like L1,L2,N . ON one terminal you well see a small ground strip This is currently connecting the neutral terminal to ground. On the new cord connect the outside two conductors to L1 +L2 connect the white conductor to the N terminal. Connect the green (ground) conductor to the frame where the copper bonding was. This seperates the neutral conductor from the equipement grounding conductor.

Is it safe to use a 3 prong dryer cord on my 2004 Kenmore Calypso dryer? I moved to an older home with a 3prong outlet.

It is safe as long as it is wired correctly. The following link explains the differences between 3 and 4 prong configurations:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3575913-installing_a_220_vac_appliance_cord

Just make sure to match the corresponsing wire colors at the terminal block in the back of the dryer:

RED - HOT (120 VAC)
BLACK - HOT (120 VAC)
WHITE - NEUTRAL (0 VAC)
GREEN - Ground

In a 3 wire configuration the Neutral (White) and Ground (Green) wires are terminated together at the terminal block.

NOTE: If the wires are not color coded, the outer two wires (left and right) are the HOT leads. The center conductor is Neutral.

The other alternative is to have an electrician install a 4-wire receptacle in your home.

If you have any questions, please post back and let me know. I hope this helps you.

4 prong power cord to a 3 prong monunt I'm trying to replace a 3prong cord with a 4 prong but there is an extra wire, what do I do with it?

Dryers come with a wire or metal strap connecting the center "neutral" terminal to the frame of the dryer. When using a four wire power cord, take that wire or strap off the frame. (it can be discarded or better yet, in case this dryer needs to ever be converted back to a three wire cord) connect the frame end of the wire / strap to the center terminal of the power block. Now, Green (ground) wire goes to the dryer frame, White (neutral) goes to the center terminal, and the Red and Black (both "hot") wires go to either outside terminal. (one to each)

I need to change the dyer cord from a 4prong cord to a 3prong cord. Is it possible? It is model number M90825760.

If you have a digital camera, you could take a picture of the plug (several different angles) and your outlet then go to one of the large chain hardware stores, camera in hand, and ask for an adaptor between the dryer's plug and your outlet. It may not be necessary to rewire the dryer at all. If they don't have one, keep reading.

The change probably is possible since dryers generally use a 2-phase connection at the most but I wouldn't recommend that you DIY. You are dealing with a line voltage whcih could be 220 and a circuit capable of supply fairly high (20) amperage.
This combination could make toast out of you if improperly wired. Any competent electrician can determine how to do the conversion with a few measurements.
There is an exception; some mfr.s have pasted a large label either inside or out on the larger panel that contains the electrical diagram of the machine.
With some care, most laymen could determine how to make the change.

WIRING DIAGRAM

The following link explains the proper wiring scheme for installing a 220VAC power cord to an appliance:

Make sure you also have a dedicated outlet and power source for your dryer. This means a single outlet with a single circuit breaker. Most homes are constructed this way to ensure safe operation of the appliance and to prevent improper loading. If you have questions, please let me know.

As far as a wiring diagram is concerned, most manufacturers place a schematic drawing inside the operator console of the appliance for troublshooting purposes. I hope this helps.
