Music can only be added through iTunes. Open iTunes and click on the device icon. Drag music that is loaded in iTunes music library onto the device. If you haven't loaded music into iTunes, you have to do that first.
See this tip posted here on this site. It may explain what is going on. copy this address into a new window --

it may not have completed the update to your ipod.
try going here, http://www.apple.com/itunes/ it will have the latest drivers for your ipod too, once it has loaded successfully onto your mac then plug the ipod back in. itunes will automatically open up, and once it has recognised your ipod reset it yourself in the ipod settings, then reload your music etc from the itunes library. If you have not created one yet then just copy your stuff over to itunes and then sync your ipod with the library. What until itunes tells you that the update is complete before you remove it from the computer. Once it is completed then right click your ipod and click on eject.
I hope this helps
The mp3 player's operating system is trying to load the songs which is not possible because most of the time itunes uses .aac format which is only compatible with ipods to fix plug into computer open device, and delete all the music files unplug and try turning on if sucessful plug back in ad load mp3's or wma's using windows media player
On windows XP pull up windows explorer go to my computer and look for your mp3, towards to bottom of the list. click on the + next to the name, then click audio, music and the album name for the song you want, right click on the song, then delete.I just tried it on mine and it worked. I haven't tried windows 2000 yet. Hope this works for you
I found the best way to delete your mp3; go to start..find you device in "my computor" it will be a generic drive. right click and go to "format" click and it will prompt you to delete "playlist".."audio" or "music". However it will erase everything on your mp3 and allow new downloads. if you want to save some files; Plug mp3 in usb port..you will get prompt to define which system to play files. I use realplayer. scroll down until you can select "rca (G)" click "view" your mp3 will load and display all songs..you can then select and delete any or all, right click and choose option. To load; choose burn/transfer scrool down on the leftside to rca (G) and you can choose from you music menu ( I suggest making a playlist first to indentfy what songs you prefer, you can always add more from all music menu. add any files that you like until full. depending on song generally about 50 to 65 son on the 512 model. Do not worry about too many songs.. NO harm....they just won't fit.... I hope this help anyone with this problem
