How is the computer going to read a CD which is black in the first place? If you are referring to the fact that perhaps its doesn't show up in the "my computer" directory to maybe write things onto it then double check to make sure the CDs arnt DVD ones and that your computer has the capability to read the correct one.

The drive plays DVDs and can read doc files, but

This problem is normal and exists with many CD/DVD drives.
On some of the drives, if you put in blank discs and try to open the disc in My Computer or Windows Explorer, Windows displays no contents or a blank disc. Whereas on other drives, you get the error message that you mentioned about incorrect function.

What software are you using to burn CDs or DVDs? Are you able to burn CDs but not DVDs or you can't burn both the discs? Did you try a CDs with a different make/manufacturer? Some drives refuse on some disc makes. Try another disc and another writing speed, or try the lowest writing speed available with your software.

Hope that helps,
Regards,
Raspal

Player doesn't read blank dvds

From the site of the company that built the computer or motherboard. Usually when this happens it is an head allignment problem or a dirty read head. Have you used/tried one of the cleaner disks on it? If that does not work then buy a replacement  DVD burner and replace it. The alignment is not something can can be done w/o fancy equiptment and burners are not expensive. All of the software wil still be intact and should work with the new burner expecially if you purchase the same brand.
Newegg.com    or                Tiger.com
Both online stores have  a good selections of OEM dvd burners.

Do you mean DVD movies wont play? If so you need to install DVD software. Use Google to search for some or buy some e.g. PowerDVD.

Hello

Assuming you have a dvd burner, do you have dvd decoder software or dvd burning software installed? Does it read burned dvds? Are you sure it's a dvd burner? If so, make sure the blank dvds you are using are the proper format ie; dvd+/-rw, etc. Good luck
