If the red button has to be held down for a period of time to get the heater going it overrides the shutoff mechanism. If you are holding it the prescibed amount of time then either the hydraulic system which keeps your unit running is bad or out of place or the metering valve is bad. Check for a copper line with a bulb on the end. It should probably be in the fire created by the heater, if not bend it to be in the heat or very close. If this is ok then you may need to get a new burner for the unit which would probably mean buying an entire new unit as the cost would probably exceed the cost of a new unit. Let me know how you make out.

I have a spc-40 heater i can not get it to stay fired up i press the fuel button and it does lite but after 15 to 20 i release button and it goes out what do i need to do to make it work again

Ensure all your connections are tight and not leaking. I would shot off the tank using the valve on the top. Disconnect it, then re-connect it. Once connected, ensure the fan on the unit starts to turn. Then you can slowly open the valve, give it a good 4-5 turns to ensure it is open. They try the ignition sequence again.

This sounds like a problem with your thermocouple.

Just remove the end of the thermocouple from where is goes into the gas valve and leave the end that goes into the flame in place.

Clean the end of the thermocouple connect by scraping off just a little metal from the end just about there the nut tightens the thermocouple into the gas valve. After you have exposed some new metal do the same inside the valve where the thermocouple seats into the gas valve.
Use a small pic or similar item to scrape inside the gas valve to expose some new metal there also.

Now reassemble the thermocouple into the gas valve and see if the heater works.

Here is a link with some more instructions.

If this does not solve the problem you may need a new thermocouple and you can find that at www.desaparts.com

Thanks

When I push my red button in it shut off the fuel and wont stay going

this is caused by a bad thermo coupling. just to make sure that it is in fact bad - hold down the button for about 20 seconds while the heater is going and if after that amount of time the unit still shuts down when you release the fuel button - then replace the thermo coupling.

Heater won't stay lit after releasing yellow button

you need to replace the thermocouple at the burner tip it will be a copper line with a bulb in the flame tip with a copper tube leading back to the gas valve and it senses the flame and keeps the gas valve open
