It is your Transmission. Mine did the EXACT same thing just a couple days after your post. If you want some troubleshooting advice, part numbers, where I bought my parts, or advice on disassembly/reassembly, I will be glad to help. The truth is, I already wrote a detailed answer to your problem and before I posted it I read the "Terms of Use" page, and when I went back to the "solutions" page, everything I wrote was gone. So, if you want it, let me know and I will try again.

Roaring sound on washing machine when spinning

Hi, It's more likely something caught in the pump or bad pump. Remove the belt under the machine and check the pump pulley for noise.

The washing machine started making a grinding noise during wash cycle (minor) and a much louder grinding noise during the spin cycle. Is this a bearing? and is it replacable? Maytag MAV7600

sounds like a bearing... although it could be the water pump... water pump is an easy fix... bearing is not an easy fix... take the belt off the bottom of the pump (under the machine) and see if it spins freely by turning it w/ your hand... or if it seems really stiff... if it looks good then it's def. your bearing...

I have a kenmore elite top load washing machine model 20957 and the agitator is not spinning, it sounds like gears are grinding so I removed everything from it and turned it off. Any solutions for this...

Hi'photogrrl80. I think I can help you. There is usually one bolt holding your agitator in place. It takes a ratchet with an extenderto get that bolt loose. then when the agitator comes outyou'll see these four little plastic gears that cause the agitator to do that motion washers do. Any good appliance outlet has the little gears for around $ 10.00. They are small but you'll see how they go back in. I've done mine twice. Good as new! good luck. You'll laugh when you see how much money you save by doing it yourself. Letme know how it turned out? skypope@live.com

Maytag mav7600 agitator works and don't

Look at timer plug on harness for pins that are sticking out from side of timer plug, away from timer. See if they are all in the same amount. Sometimes one can work its way out so it won't make a good contact. Push in to plug if you find one.

If your washer fills, agitates, drains, but will not spin, the likely cause is the gear case (transmission). A new gear case can run about $200 just for the part. With labor, this could be a bit expensive to repair. I hope this helps you some.

Grinding niose from agitator.

If the fill and drain functions correctly, AND the spin cycle works correctly, AND the cycle itself starts and completes correctly, the problem being that the back and forth motion of the agitator starts the loud grinding noise, it will likley be broken gears in the transmission. The single most expensive part in the washing machine.

Loud noise while agitating in wash cycle

If you begin dissassembly from the tub down, you wil come to the transmission with the spindle sticking out of it. If you undo the bendable tabs all around the transmission it comes apart in two halves. Careful, its full of oil. The spindle has a plastic gear bolted to the bottom of it. It meshes with other gears in the tranny. It has sheered teath and is making the noise.
