Swintec 7040 Typewriter

This Swintec 7040 typewriter types the wrong letters and symbols when used. Although I have tried to change the position of the type wheel, it always returns to the same place where a = v.

First check check the pitch selector switch to be sure it is not in proportional spacing. if it isn't push down on it and see if it goes away, if is goes away the keyboard needs repaired.

If you mean that it types the wrong letters check the pitch slide switch on the left of the ketboard. it should be in 10 or 12 not in PS.

My Swintec 7040 when I type a letter or word only write a half of the letter or the word and when I try to erase a letter or word the typewriter erase this but the erase ribbon stay in the same position...

There are a few possibilities. If only the tops are printing Press down on the platen to be sure it is fully seated in the side frame. The T/W may be in the overstrike ribbon mode Code period, comma or slash will get you out of that mode.

When I type straight letters I get symbols and numbers an example I typed the phrase "Hi How are you?" w w-2 v/j a-qI appeared on my paper I have no idea how to clear this and return it to normal script

There is a switch on the keyboard that must have gotten moved..for symbols..or the printwheel is in wrong. Take the pw out and reseat it. it should spin when it is snapped back in. you may have to close the cover for it to go to it's Home position.

If what you are saying is that you get 2 vertical lines instead of a letter start with a new printwheel, what you are seeing is the hammer face when it misses the printwheel.

Types wrong letters

It sounds like you have the 10,12,15,PS selector switch on PS with a 10, or 12 print wheel installed. Return to the left margin, move the switch to 10 and type.

Types wrong characters

If the typewriter is typing letters or symbols that you do not type, it is usually because the Pitch Selector is set to "PS". The pitch selector is on the left hand side and has the numbers 10,12, 15 and PS. Place the selector on 10 or 12 and you will be OK.
Also, check to make sure your printwheel is installed properly. Remove it and put it back in to make sure.

Another thing you can try is to clear the memory. To do this, turn off the machine. Place a piece of paper in the machine sideways. Hold down the MAR REL key and while holding it down, turn on the machine. Wait 2 seconds, then let go of the key. The typewriter will start typing. Shut the machine off after about 15 seconds. Then turn it on as usual. This will clear the typewriter's memory and unexpected charaters should not happen anymore.
