From my laptop. I tried two different laptops, and the usb doesn't power up the printer (it is plugged in), but when I plug into our desktop USB, it powers right up??

Yeah, tried that with no luck. It's odd that the usb from the desktop works fine, while the usb from two laptops neither work. What's up?

  • Rahja Feb 22, 2008

    I wonder...
Does the printer get power from the usb, or does the usb just complete a circuit for the a/c power? When I touch the usb cord to the desktop, it sparks. On the laptops, no spark. Consternation.

If power comes from the usb, why the a/c power cord?

Grounding problem or what? When I plug the printer into my Samsung new series 9 laptop (both USB ports) the cursor starts jumping around by itself. It stops if I hold a hand firmly somewhere on the laptop....

Sounds like you may have a conflict with your USB ports.

I would always have the power to the laptop connected.

Check the printer power cable ( 3 Prong )

Try removing the printer drivers and reloading them.

Hope this helps

Connect usb port

Check all computer connections and cords. Is the powerstrip for surge protector light indicator bar (usually inside the off/on switch itself) on?
All it takes is a pet to walk over it or a foot to bump a cord and break the power connection. Mine do it all the time. Check the power on/off button on the printer to see if it accidently got powered down.

Power off printer, remove power plug from printer, remove usb cable from printer, pull out paper and check for jams, check toner cartridge, clean area underneath the toner cartridge head, uninstall printer from windows control panel, reboot computer, plug-in printer with a different working usb cable, plug in power to printer, power on printer, reinstall printer driver. All in those steps exactly. If that doesn't work I would say you have a bad printer on your hands.

How to connect to a laptop

Lexmark is one of the most popular printer manufacturers, and the installation process is fairly straightforward no matter what computer brand you have. Lexmark, however, doesn't always include all of the equipment required to hook up the printer. If you want to hook up your Lexmark printer to your Gateway laptop, you will probably need to purchase a printer USB cable.

1.Plug your Lexmark printer into the power outlet.
2.Turn on your laptop, or make sure all software programs are closed if your computer is already on.
3.Insert your installation disk into your Gateway laptop's CD or DVD drive. Wait for the "Welcome" screen to appear. If it doesn't appear after a minute, launch the installation CD manually by going to your start menu and clicking on "Run." In the "Run" field, type: D:\setup.exe
4.Press the "Install" button on your "Welcome" screen to go on to the "Introduction" screen.
5.Press "Continue" on the "Introduction screen" and press "Continue" again on the "Read Me" screen. Agree to the license agreement and follow any additional installation prompts.
6.Connect the Lexmark printer to your Gateway laptop when prompted. Plug the USB cable to the back of the Lexmark printer in the "Quick Connect Laptop Port." Then plug the other end of the USB to your Gateway laptop.

I hope you find it very helpful. Thank you for using fixya.

Hi there, I have a Toshiba external HDD 250GB that is giving me some problems and need some urgent help! When I plug my external HDD into my laptop everything seems to work fine. The lights come on, the...

It sounds as though your issue is one of in adequate power. Do both the external HDD have their own power source, or are they powered through USB? if they are powered through USB it may be that as soon as the second drive spins up to transfer the files, it overwhelms the limited power of the laptop. You can try it with the laptop plugged in (though this may not provide it with more power than the battery) or by purchasing a usb hub with its own external power source so that it is not drawing power from the laptop, or purchase an external hard drive with its own power source
The other option is simpler and free, and its to copy the files first to your laptops own HDD, then unplug the source external hard drive, and then plug in the drive you want to copy to, then transfer the files from your laptops hard drive. This will of course take twice as long, but will cost you nothing.

Go to the website below, select your OS, and download the drivers. Than install the drivers and follow the instruction. It will ask you to plug the printer via usb at some point.

I keep get a connection error. Ck that USB cable is connected and the power switch is on. Each time it comes up. Help

Make sure you have the USB plugged into the back USB ports on a desktop computer and try each of the different ports on a laptop computer. What Singer doesn't tell you (and probably isn't aware of) is that the back ports provide more voltage than the front ones (and is also true of certain ports on your laptop). The USB cable and your computerized sewing machine require more voltage than the other ports allowed.

Give this a try-it should do the trick.

My computer will not open up futura. it says connection error. everything is connected?

Make sure you have the USB cable plugged into the BACK of your computer, not the front or a USB hub. If it's a laptop, keep trying different ports. The USB for this machine needs more power than the other ports offer (12 V), something Singer doesn't tell you, and probably doesn't even now.

Best of luck!

Restart the compuetr and try again. be sure that the USB cord to the external HD is NOT plugged in when the computer restarts until Windows has been loaded completely.
You can also try a different USB cable and a different USB port on your laptop
