I would recommend a full restore to 1.1.3, from there, you can jailbreak with ziphone.

To get your phone into DFU mode to restore, you can try:

Step 1. Turn off your iPhone.
Step 2. Hold down the power and home button.
Step 3. When you see the Apple logo, release the power button but continue holding the home button down.
Step 4. Open iTunes and wait for it to tell you that its in restore mode.

Upgrade to new softwear version 11.1

Hi Karin, to best of my knowledge you cannot update a 3G much beyond iOS 4.2.1 or so. I think even the 4G does not allow newest iOS 8.1.2 - the 4S does.
Even if you mean Mac OS the newest version is 10.10 - 11.1 may be in beta, but not anything that would effect your 3G.

Good luck!

Up graded to 3.1.3..now i cant get a signal..what do i do???My phone was jail broken..but like i said no signal so i cant make any calls now.

Updating to official 3.1.3 will lose your unlock, possibly forever.
You can't downgrade. Lesson is never upgrade the iPhone without checking that the unlock works on the new version.

Problem after jailbreaking

If you accidentally upgraded to 1.1.3, then downgraded, your phone is going to be in a funky state. Here's the fix:

Restore your phone to 1.1.3 to get the latest features
Download ziphone from http://www.ziphone.org/
run ziphone -j at the command line (with your phone plugged in and itunes shutdown)

Now you'll have a working, jailbroken phone, at v1.1.3
