My refrigerator/ freezer doesn't seem to be too cool. Cleaned bottom coils and left unplugged for 24 hrs. Turned back on and it worked fine for a week. Now it is not cooling again. Any ideas why?

Hello Chris Conrad,

Worked fine for a week... is actually a pretty good sign...
MOST likely means the cooling is OK...

FROST-FREE (defrost)... should become your focus

TYPICALLY... (assuming you have that type of UNIT).

after the week... is it clogged with frost / ice (cool in the freezer area but not the refrigerator... (a week is a little less than average to become non-functional in the refrigerator (cheap little refrigerator thermometers come in really handy here... (but still cool in the freezer area where all the REAL cooling is done))).

Can you see frost/ice blocking any air slots in the FREEZER AREA??

Is water being put in the (I assume) "defrost pan" daily...?

Easy to check... put a strip of typing paper folded over the edge of the (water tray) defrost pan...

Still clean, straight & dry tomorrow = defrost circuit failure
(again.... assuming it is a "frost-free").

Yes (clean & straight) means I am wrong: paper
will look rumpled & ugly (possibly wet).

Then...

You have a HUGE AIR INTRUSION problem you need to fix first... (door alignments, gaskets, etc.) then get sophisticated about makes, model numbers... & how soon it takes to get ICE-BOUND.

You can comment me back... or get out the original
refrigerator documents... (typically) looking for:
- Defrost timer or control board
- Defrost thermostat
- Defrost HEATING ELEMENT

OR

Search on line to parts/spares + appliance+ (your model number).

Good luck...

Fridge section not cooling enough but freezer OK

Is the fan blowing in the freezer section? Also, check to see if you have airflow thru the damper (vent) in the frig section.

Freezer cools & makes ice but refrigerator side does not cool sufficiently.

First thing check and see if the fan motor in the freezer is running, it circulates cold air to the refrigerator. Then check for ice anback panel of freezer if there is ice you have a defrist system problem

My freezer is getting cold but it does not seem like the refrigerator is cooling; any suggestions on what might be the problem? It was working fine when I put it away after the last use.

I had a similar problem my unit mainboard died and i had it replaced with WR55X10552. The tech mentioned that i needed to manualy defrost by unplugging my unit and wait upto 24hrs so it would melt the ice that accumalated which wasnt allowing the air to reach the refridgerator portion.Because my old mainboard didnt defrost my unit.Hope this helps!

Water accumalating in the bottom of the fridge.

A common problem. All modern refrigerators have an automatic deicer. The heater kicks in, then MELTS the ice in build up in the freezer for a short period before freezing again. This water drains either in the fridge or out the back to the catch tray. Simply pull out the bottom drawers and clean the clogged drain hold where the water can drain and evaporate in the catch tray as it is designed to.

My freezer is frosting up on the back wall and sometimes makes a clicking noise. It also takes about 4 hours to freeze the water in my ice cube trays. What is the problem and any suggestions how to fix it?

You could very well have a defrost issue at the evaporator coil. Every evap coil, which is located in freezer section, will eventually accumalate ice by virtue of moisture hitting a -5 degree coil. The point though is that 2 to 3 times a day the freezer should cycle into a 10 to 20 minute defrost. There are three components to the defrost cycle... the defrost control (which can either be a timer, or a circuit board), a defrost heater, and a defrost sensor. Some of the Whirlpools had defrost sensor problems that were built between 2000 and 2008.

In all honesty, unless you feel comfortable removing the back interior panel in the freezer, then I suggest calling a professional

Refrigerator freezer is not freezing, ice accumalates on one side of the back wall

How to check everything
http://www.acmehowto.com/howto/appliance/refrigerator/refrigerator.php

The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent(damper) between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through it. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp.

If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too.

check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle
