Do you have red-eye reduction turned on? If so, try turning it off and see what happens.

Are you pressing the button half-way to let the camera lock in the focus (it will beep) before pressing the rest of the way? Do you have the flash set on red-eye? If so, the pre-flash will make your daughter squint...turn the flash to normal. Better still, get some of the new compact flourescent light bulbs balanced for daylight and a couple of 8 or 10' clip-on reflectors from Walmart and use them as your light source for professional results. You can find tips on how to set them up by googling portrait pictures with two lights.

My Portrait photos are overexposed despite using the 'portrait setting'. No problems with scenes etc

Is the flash going off each time? Are you too close? Try moving back a little and using the zoom to get closer.

See your manual, page 54 and 55, 64, and also page 70 here. Would suggest trying indoor and portrait mode first (page 54 and 55), with the flash set to ON always (page 64). If your not satisfied with the results, try Program auto-exposure mode, and adjusting exposure compensation (page 70).

Can't turn the flash on, it's set to "off" on default; and when i try to turn it on there is no "on" option in the flash menu, just "off"

check that you do not have the setting on burst as it will not be able to flash in this mode. when looking atthe screen about to take a photo, select menu, the first thingthat comes up is the mode, if it is in burst change in to normal and your camera should now have the option for flash or auto again :) good luck

How do i take the best wedding pictures with ditigal camera

Pictures must be properly framed before you click.
See that you are setting your object against light.
See that you are not too far or too close to the object.
Landscape and Portrait should be properly framed.
A single person half pose will look good in Portrait.
Full group picture of 4 or 5 people looks good in Portrait frame.
Large group fits best in landscape.
Be quick in making choice of poses.
Before the crowd starts pouring in, see that you have finished clicking close ups of bride groom.
All the Best

Best 35mm film for outdoor photos

The best film is the one YOU like the best.

Flash can be used to fill in the shadows in outdoor portraits, as you say. Do it by all means, if that's the effect you want. Sometimes you may not want it. Do it both ways and see how they come out.

Photography is all about YOUR creativity.

Flash

My problem is similar. Takes photo fine. Views most recent photo fine. Cannot zoom. Cannot regulate flash. Cannot scroll photos. Cannot delete. Essentially, all those buttons are non-responsive. I first noticed it with the flash. Can you do these other things? I think it is an internal failure. Just past one year old. Has been subject to tempurature change lately.

Flash!!!

Well you probably cannot- the tube or the capacitor have malfunctioned. Try the Vivitar Tech Support team in their website - but I guess it is new camera time unless it has warranty left.
