Typically when no colors react to convergence adjustment it is the convergence ICs. Since only one color is involved here I would not have changed the convergence ICs, but now you know that they were not the problem. Since you stated that the blue moves but will not converge it is probably not the digital convergence box, it could be but first try this. I've only seen this once but the new units have sensors in the screen for the automatic ajustment of the convergence, if one of them moves you would have the problem you described. Unplug unit. Remove the back. Remove the top half of the back containing the mirror. Be careful not to damage it. This would also be a good time to clean the mirror before reassembly. You will have a much brighter and sharper picture. Looking at the TV screen from the back you should see the sensors. Check each one for proper placement. It should be obvious, they set in a hole and typically are glued or screwed fast. Fix any problems and reassemble. If your unit still has the same problem there is only one item left to check. The digital convergence box. They aren't that expensive anymore. www.encompass.com or www.shopjimmy.com should have what you need. Let me know how you make out or if you need more help.

The course adjustments are used after you replace the digital convergence box to get the alignment close enough so the automatic convergence will work. Automatic will only move it a small distance so if you are not already close you will not be able to get good convergence. All digital boxes a set at the factory for the set they are in. If you change the box it has to be done again because all boxes are just a little different.

Eventhough the blue lines don't align all the way, are they straight like the red and the green, do they look like they would align if there were more correction range available? or they still look arched .

You have a few possible reasons for this.

First some questions:

Was problem exactly the same before you replaced the STK's?

Does blue move in both directions? (up/down and left/right)

If blue moves but will not move far enough let me know.

The more you tell me the better I can help you.

My first guess would be a bad convergence amplifier - this is common, although usually all three of the amplifiers in the integrated circuit die at the same time, which throws off at least two colors and creates a "bow-tie" effect. I surmise you have half of a bow-tie in blue only.

If you could look at the blue output waveforms with an oscilloscope, you would see right away if this is the problem (flat-line instead of sawtooth wave). It is possible that both of the blue convergence amplifiers are working, but one output is not getting to the blue deflection yoke.

Don't mess with the convergence anymore until you get this taken care of. Changing the convergence now will only make it harder to get it back to where it should be once the circuit is fixed.

On my Panasonic PT-56TW53, the down left quarter of the screen has a big colour distorsion. Convergence can adjust blue and red, but green is not able to show a straight line. Is tis a mechanical adjstment? Help would be great.

Red, green, and blue lines at bottom of screen, mirror looking effect, also looks like 3D. Got at a garage sale so no manual.

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right. And you should be able to get the grid straight.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a fix

Need to know what convergence chips are in Panasonic PT51HX41E

your model has two STK392-110 CONvergence Cs, you will also most likely need at least a few of the 2.2 ohm 2watt convergence resistors. I am posting a link to the actualrepair kit for your model which contains both Convergence ICs and all 6 of the convergence resistors and they send instructions with pictures that show how to do the repair.

Panasonic hd projection with conver. problems

Your TV most likely has one or more possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Picture of a set that needs the fluid changed.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

Check the resistors in the red convergence circuit right next to the Ics you will need to lift one side of the resistor out of circuit to acurately check them but usually one or two resistors will be opened when the ICs go out
