This sounds like it might be a defective CCD imager. If so, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check this link for more info.

SOURCE: Black screen for Shooting Canon S3 IS

I have a similar problem with my Canon S3 IS. Dark/black LCD in Shooting mode. However, I can view my existing photos in Display mode. I was about to spend money to get a Panasonic TZ5. Somehow I bumped into a solution post for S2 IS. Here is the link:

I tried their solutions twice and it WORKS. My S3 is working fine now.

SOURCE: the camera is shooting, pictures are taken-

Refer to this service notice from Canon. If you can see icons on the LCD, and can view photos you have taken in the past, you probably have an image sensor (CCD) failure. If Canon determines this is the problem, they will repair your camera at no cost, regardless of warranty status.

LCD Display is Black

the image in the LCD monitor will darken in strong sunlight or bright light. This is normal occurrrence in device CCDs and does not contitute a malfunction. This image will not be recoded when shooting still photos, but it will be recorded wihen shooting movies.Read you owner manual and adjust the MENU, according with your o. manual.Otherwise you must go the repair shop

My camera takes picture but there all black? The

Last year my Canon PSA60 got the black screen in shooting mode. Menu display was normal and so the picture review mode.
Canon service center replaced the image sensor for free. When it happened again, I asked the service center for unit exchange (trade-in/upgrade program). Now I have my PowerShot S5IS. Good bye PSA60.

Canon has issued this in their notice page: http://support-asia.canon-asia.com/index.jsp?fuseaction=support&prod_type=notices-digitalcameras-lcd

Black screen while shooting, but still taking pictures not black

Nonononooooo fotomohamed, he can review just taken pictures on the LCD. The screen is working.

Actually, it sounds like you just accidentally pressed the DISPLAY button on the back of your camera. This manually turns the screen on and off in picture taking mode to save batteries (you would then use optical viewfinder). Just press it once and it should turn back on.

Canon SD 550-- sensor problem? Bought 3/2006 and have had no problems. Suddenly, LED screen went black--shows nothing and cannot take a picture altho will flash and record black picture. Shooting...

The shutter of the camera is not opening that is why every picture taken is recorded black. It is a mechanical problem and probably has nothing to do with the sensor. Not very expensive

No display at all. But able to take pictures with Canon A75

Sounds like you might have accidentally turned the display off. Turn on the camera and press the DISP button once on the back of your camera.
