Question about Tomtom ONE GPS Receiver

3 Answers

On my Tom Tom 700 I have just paid a lot of money for a map update but all my favorites have gone -- some remote places with no postal addresses. I have a backup -- is there any way I can take the faves file and drop it onto the new map? Thank you.

While the tom tom backup files seem to be there there is no such .cfg file even when I search the entire hard drive of the pc.

The 700 is one of the earliest models.

Many thanks for your kind help :)

I do not see the .cfg file in my backup suite and the url link just takes me to the Tom Tom home page and I get the message that the system is not working :(

  • david238 Feb 07, 2010

Thanks :) But which file(s) am I looking for and where should I move them to? That .cfg file does not seem to be on my device or my PC hard drive. Have they changed the name of the file (or extention -- I have done a complete search of .cfg files)

Many thanks, I appreciate your help.

    David

Hi, it doesn't present quite like that in Explorer. I am running Windows 7. I have two map folders...

    a) Western_Europe which is empty
    b) Western Europe, which has loads of references to hotels and places we have visited all over the Continent over the last few years.

But I cannot find that file you mentioned -- Fixya does not allow me to read your message alongside this reply window but there is absolutely no .cfg file associated with Tom Tom. However, all the faves were there before I downloaded and installed the new maps. The entire Western Europe suite is pretty vast.....do they do it some other way?

I suppose I could backup the present (new) system and then restore the old but what would I be looking for?

    Thanks and kind regards, David

Connect The ToTom to the PC Use Explorer and select the files you want to transfer and place them in the Favorites Folder that is currently blank. Remove the unit from PC and reboot.

Hi,
If you reset factory settings or update your map you can restore your favorites from a device Backup.
Your Favorites are located inside your map folder, stored in the file MapSettings.cfg. This file consists of the following:

You can use the following link to help you restore your fav. back

    Hi David,
Sorry for the delay in response. You can try doing this

Connect your GPS to the computer:

Click the Windows Start button and then click My Documents.

    2. Open TomTom > HOME > Backup.

    3. Open the folder named for your TomTom device (e.g. 'GO', 'ONE').

    4. Open the most recent backup (the highest-numbered backup will be the most recent (Backup01, Backup02, etc.).

    5. Open InternalMemory.
    Backup>go>bacup01>internal memory

6.Locate and open the map folder (this should be labeled after the region which the map covers e.g. USA_and_Canada)

    7. Select the file MapSettings.cfg by clicking it once and then click Edit > Copy.

    8.
Click the Windows Start button and then click My Computer.

    9. Double-click the TomTom Removable Disk.

    10. Double-click the map folder (e.g. North_America).

    11. Click on Edit > Paste.

    • Be sure to overwrite the existing file, if prompted to do so.

    12. Properly disconnect your TomTom from your computer.

    Thanks for using Fixya

How to activate the map once we have the code?

You can activate products by connecting the unit to a USB port of a computer. If The Tomtom Home application is installed on computer it will launch and update the unit. On page 1 of main Home menus there is an icon for activation.

To make things easy for you I am enclosing a screen capture from the HOME 2.7 application.

When I switch on my TomTom, SD card has a red cross?

This problem is due to the memory card not containing the TomTom application or map. To update the application onto the memory card, Connect the device to your computer. Open the TomTom Home application. Click on 'Update My Device'. This should then install the application onto the SD card. Alternativly, you could perform all the steps above without the SD card in the device, this will install the application onto the internal memory. Note: you may also need to install your maps, voices, etc after you update.

Why is it that with my tom tom GPS i cant search for exact addresses?

get the latest APPLICATION from www.tomtom.com or by plugging in via USB. This should update your device and you will be able to find lots more when searching, some addresses do not exist ( to the tomtom) and these should be FLAGGED as MAP ERORS using your device. Then they will be amended by Tomtom corp. in later updates of the maps, gor this reason you also need to keep you tomtom updated via MAPSHARE.

Your Favorites are located in the Map directory in the TomTom.
For example if your using the North American map (North_America).
In a file named MapSettings.cfg.
When you update the map and some times the application this file is overwritten.
I recommend copying the file to the root directory of the TomTom or your computer if changes are made. That way you have a easy back-up of your favorites file.

Unfortunately to recover your old file you may damage other file in the process.

I hope this helps.

I can't figure out how to apply for the products I need to download the map updates for my Tomtom Go 700 (maps are about 7 years old.

You have to download TomTom home, plug your device in via a USB device and TomTom home will start up. You can then download and update your files..

Make sure Tom Tom Home has finished updating your device before you unplug it or you will corrupt the device and render it useless..

Update maps for Tom Tom Go 700, including those for East Europe

Even when you do that it doesn't really update it just updates the software so that it looks like you can update the maps but when you touch to update it just tells you, you have to get an updated map for about $100.00 US. This is bull because you pay upward of 400.00 for this GPS. Then you have to pay pay and pay out of pocket over and over again. So there should be a way to update the map without coming out of pocket every year. The really funny thing is that I got mine about 1.5 years ago and the maps were about 3 years old if not more. Now they even want money to update POI now. Which they probably charge the owner of a business to have his address and number available for the consumer that has this line of GPS available? Tom Tom should probably take a look at other brands like Garmin for instance and see why they are doing so much better in sales because there maps are better. But like any computer its always the software that make it or breaks it in this market.....

Lost favorites when trying to update

There is no solution, and the manufacturer is not amenable to any news of this.

It used to be possible to remove the mapsettings.cfg file from the TomTom unit's maps before downloading and installing a new map, then to replace the file; however, TomTom changed the coding on the latest maps so that the software no longer recognises the old cfg file. There is a complex workaround where you change your favorites, one by one, into Points of Interest - but it seems pointless having a Favorites item when you have to do this.
