I discovered the problem when trying to scan from the document feeder today. It would pull the paper in, but stop once the paper got to the scan head. Next I tried to scan from the flatbed and I noted the scan head did not seem to be moving... same deal with copying.
I finally received a "Machine Error A6" code and a message to call Brother support... they were of no help and said to take it to a service center... so is anyone familiar with what might be my issue? My deduction is the scanner bar/head is not moving.
Called the service center, they connected me to the Philippines, walked me through a host of different options, told me to clean the scanner head with alcohol- twice- no success. Probably not worth fixing, probably get a new.

A6 is a scan failure detection.
This sounds to me like the motor running the scanner is not working.
However, there are three or four causes of this error. The home
position sensor, the motor, the CCD, the main board and the engine
You should be able to find the sensor that detects the scanner lid.
Fool it with a piece of tape or a finger. Look at the scanner after
pressing copy to see what is happening.
You could open up the scanner and check the movement to make sure
it's smoth, but this is a lot of work. The best option is to pick up a
used scanner from a Brother service centre. Install it and see if it
solves your problem. Of course, you wouldn't be able to return it if it
did not solve the fault. This is why Brother recommended you take it to
a service centre, the troubleshooting is very in-depth for a fault of

Using your scanner program such as PaperPort, you really have to pay attention on where the document/photo is located for scanning.
Steps 1. Click on Start, Programs, Paperport 2. Right above the Word "SCAN", you will have several options on; a. Document or Photo b. Flatbed or Feeder 3. Once step 2b has been selected, the M20i will scan your document per your instructions.
Note:#1 If you place your document on Flatbed but your selection on your screen says "Feeder" where do you think the scanner will look for your document? The answer is --> Feeder!!!
Note #2 Make sure that you click Accept,& DONE, other wise M20i will just sit and wait for your next command.

If you are receiving an Error Code 103 or a Paper Jam error,
but there are no pages in the ADF (Automatic Document Feeder), follow
the steps below:
Close the scanning application (such as PaperPort)
Turn off the scanner and the computer
If you have a combination ADF with a Flatbed scanner, unplug the ADF cable from the base of the scanner
Plug the ADF cable back in
Turn on the scanner power
Turn on the computer
Try scanning again
For a Paper Jam or Error Code 103, make sure that the ADF cable in
the rear is connected to the scanner base. Check the flatbed to make
sure that it is clear. A page incorrectly placed on the flatbed may
interfere with a page feeding through the ADF.
If your scanner stops scanning due to a paper jam in the Automatic
Document Feeder (ADF), a warning dialog box appears after a few moments.
To clear a paper jam:
Open the Automatic Document Feeder cover.
Remove the jammed paper and close the cover.
If you are receiving a paper jam error, or if the scanner is
running continuously, check to make sure the paper sensor arm is not
Open the Automatic Document Feeder cover.
Look for the small black plastic arm
When you press on this arm, it should move freely up and down
If the arm is stuck down, please contact Technical Support for troubleshooting options
Clearing Paper Jams If your scanner stops scanning due to a paper jam in the Automatic Document Feeder, a warning dialog box opens after a few moments. To clear a paper jam: 1. Press the ADF cover release on the top-left of the scanner body to open the Automatic Document Feeder cover. 2. Remove the jammed paper and close the cover. To reduce the number of paper jams, smooth and straighten the paper before scanning and adjust the guides to the paper size.

Have you tried scanning in the flat bed mode? Does it scan okay? If the image is good, then there is no problem with scan module. Check your page settings. If the page size selected for scanning is smaller than actual size, there can be some peoblems. Try and scan with max size. Check if the sensors are dust/paper free. A small piece of paper (The small round discarded piece from Computer stationery) in the paper sensor can create trouble.
please check all sensor arms in the document feeder. The sensor arm in the middle just below the separation pad is called 'paper end sensor'. If this sensor arm is blocked or broken the scanner don't stop the feeder. Another possibility is a driver error.
I work at a brother authorized repair center, the bad thing is that there is no specified A6 error, in any manual and when you call brother and tell them that you are calling from an Authorized repair center and that you need help with an A6 they*gasp* tell you to call an authorized repair center. Sorry about the rant.
The A6 is a general error relating to the scandeck on most MFC machines(9700/8440/8640) etc...
try changing the main PCB, it can be a little costly, however it generally doesn't take long, that is the general cause of the error. However, sometimes that doesn't work, so to save yourself a little time and money, just go buy another printer.
