Question about Brother MFC-8220 Fax

Scanner not working

I discovered the problem when trying to scan from the document feeder today. It would pull the paper in, but stop once the paper got to the scan head. Next I tried to scan from the flatbed and I noted the scan head did not seem to be moving... same deal with copying. I finally received a "Machine Error A6" code and a message to call Brother support... they were of no help and said to take it to a service center... so is anyone familiar with what might be my issue? My deduction is the scanner bar/head is not moving. Called the service center, they connected me to the Philippines, walked me through a host of different options, told me to clean the scanner head with alcohol- twice- no success. Probably not worth fixing, probably get a new.

I had the same problem and all indications were that it was terminal. I bought another Brother MFC which I use JUST for faxing and copying. My "bad" printer has been working for months as a PRINTER, so that is what I am using it for. Ironically that functionality is on it's way out too since it is making ungodly noises, but I extended the life almost a year.

A6 is a scan failure detection.

This sounds to me like the motor running the scanner is not working. However, there are three or four causes of this error. The home position sensor, the motor, the CCD, the main board and the engine board.

You should be able to find the sensor that detects the scanner lid. Fool it with a piece of tape or a finger. Look at the scanner after pressing copy to see what is happening.
You could open up the scanner and check the movement to make sure it's smoth, but this is a lot of work. The best option is to pick up a used scanner from a Brother service centre. Install it and see if it solves your problem. Of course, you wouldn't be able to return it if it did not solve the fault. This is why Brother recommended you take it to a service centre, the troubleshooting is very in-depth for a fault of this nature.

Why is there a black line on copies when pages scanned with automatic document feeder but fine when using the flatbed scanner?

Different paper path, the MultiFunction unit is dirty - Most likely toner inside the roller or paper path. Try a laser cleaning cloth that you can buy in some stores or online. Search: Staples

The photocopying using the feeder leaves a black line

There is a separate scanner glass from the flatbed scanner glass.
Without a make/model I cannot tell you exactly how to access it, but once you have uncovered the document feed scanner glass area, the glass will need to be cleaned well, and then you will be able to scan from the feeder without the black line appearing.

Black line 1 inch wide right side ,when copies are made and faxing

Hi,
When the paper is fed through Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) is is scanned before copy or fax. The scanner is fixed type and is located just below the ADF.
The lines are due to dirty scanner mirror. The printer/ scanner design is based Sheet-Fed Scanner. Open/Lift the Control Panel (scanner top )(by pulling it up from front - the area from where the paper to scan comes out). Look out for the horizontal mirror and use a soft, damp, lint-free cloth to gently clean the scanner mirror, rollers etc. and enjoy clear scanning and copying!
creativetech_52.jpg
Inspect for any tron pieces of paper dirt etc.DONT USE PAPER, CHEMICALS OR ANY ABRASIVE CLOTH as it may damage the parts.
Also note that your machine can scan an image only 8.15 inches wide, regardless of how wide the paper is.

Hope it helps! Good Luck! Thanks for using Fixya!

I using a roller fax machine. today i had fax a documents that have 4 pages and i put together and let it run auto. i confirmed that i fax once only but the receiver received the first page more than 10...

By "roller fax" if you mean auto document feeder, so what's the problem? If you didn't see each of the 4 pages feed into the machine one at a time then what happened at the other end could be because something happened at your end. It's the reason we scan and email most critical documents today.

When making a copy on our Canon copier (super G3; image class MF4150) we are getting a vertical black line down the entire length of the paper. Is there something we can do to fix it? SG

You can fix this yourself by cleaning the scanner glass. When you insert a document to make a copy it is pulled in and travels over a thin strip of glass. When something gets stuck on this glass it is read or scanned as a solid line. What you need to do is make a copy. Then put that copy in the feeder the same way you put the original document in. Now the line on the copy will "line up" with the area of the glass that has something stuck to it. Use this as a guide to pop open the feeder cover, locate the glass and clean it with a cloth dampened with a bit of glass cleaner. Once you have it cleaned just run a copy again and the line should be gone. Sometimes a small flashlight helps to locate the glass.
Good Luck and Thank You for using Fixya.

How do i fax multi pages at once

Your document feeder should allow you it install a stack of originals, amount depends on machine specifications. Dial one number and send your multi-page document.

if not the feeder tires may need to be cleaned, a few drops of alcohol in the center of a clean piece of paper then run it through the feeder, put the paper in then when it stops press the stop button and it should eject the document, in doing so pass the alcohol past the feed tires. do this a couple of times then try your multi-page document again.

Hope this helps

Scanning

Our problem is not solved. It was suggested the feeder needed cleaning or wasn't working. The feeder works as we make copies of documents. If one is scanning can you feed the document or can you only scan one page at a time by placing it on the window?
