Dell poweredge 830 cd-rom unknown bios

Enter the set up (BIOS) menu by tapping the F2 key. Hold down the <Alt> key and depress the <E> then the <F> keys in succession. This will force the motherboard to load default settings and also force the motherboard to redetect all IDE devices. Note: The selection for the floppy drive will be set to ON. If you do not have one then you must disable floppy in set up (BIOS) menu.

How should the BIOS be set up?

This is the recommended way to do it.Turn on your computer and press F2 to enter the system setup. If you have problems with the Bios you have to get a Bios upgrade by getting software from dell then you can do the following.Reset the boot sequence to boot first from the floppy drive or the CD drive (depending on whether your flash BIOS update is supplied on floppy disk or CD).Insert the flash BIOS update floppy disk or CD, and reboot the computer. The computer updates the BIOS and then automatically reboots. mmediately press F2 to enter the system setup program, and reset the boot sequence to the normal setting. Then exit the system setup program.

DELL POWEREDGE 6400 IS NOT BOOTING FROM THE CD

Hello,

Go to your BIOS and change the boot sequence so that the system boots to the CD 1st. (You should see a tab or label that says Boot Order or Boot Device.)

Good Luck

Trying to boot from external dvd drive

u must either have one of the foll...to boot and install OS...also the seq in BIOS must be availabe and enabled
1 Floppy
2 CD Rom Drive - internal
3 CD Rim Drive - External connected thru USB
4 You can also try to connect a USB pen drive having the OS install program and try - I have not tried that so not sure if this option works...sorry
5 If u can open the machine then u can connect another internal HD(this can contain ur OS install files) to the cable (connector points in the flat cable) that connect your internal HD to the Motherboard.

if i can think of anything else i will post
all the best

Unable to boot to anything external.

Save yourself some trouble. Pull a CD/DVD drive out of another computer or just buy one. They are very cheap. Connect the CD/DVD drive to the server and install the OS as usual.

If you are lucky WS2008 will already have a compatible SCSI/RAID driver. Otherwise, you will need to press F6 and install the driver from the floppy.

If this helps please vote for my solution.

Does Dell PowerEdge 4600 Server support DVD ROM

I am working on one of these now and yes, it should boot from DVDROM. Be aware that it is a notebook style drive and there are no onboard IDE or SATA controllers, so once the drive dies you're in for a wallet hit. Same goes for the floppy drive which is integrated with the DVDROM. Even worse, the presence of the broken floppy usually means a USB floppy drive won't help when loading windows drivers at install time.
