Unfortunately you may have damaged multiple components depending on which wire you actually shorted. Your burners are usually going to operate completely independent from your oven.

Your oven is controlled by a relay in your control board or your thermostat depending on if you have a digital display. If your oven is not working then you may have shorted out your thermostat/control board which are both fairly expensive parts.

Your burners are going to operate just off the switches which send 240v to them when turned on.

Depending on your model if its a higher end model you may have non-resettable fuse in line with your components designed to protect them if a short would be to occur. Without a schematic or model number unfortunately I cannot tell you for sure. It seems odd that your oven and burners would go out at the same time from a short which is why I would lean towards a break in power somewhere.

If you have a voltmeter I would check at your outlet to make sure you are getting 240V into the unit because lights will work with 120v but you will get no heat. I would definitely check for proper voltage into the unit before junking it or calling a repairman.

Next time if you include your model number (probably located in the broiler drawer) it may allow me to give you more specific advise. Hope this helps _MJ_

Do you have any power at all, i.e. clocks, etc., did you possibly knock out a circuit breaker in the house panel doing this??if this is a dual-fuel or gas range it could have damaged the spark-module too

Surface Burner Replacement on Electric Smooth Top Range

This advice explains the steps necessary to replace one of the surface elements on a smooth top electric range.

The cook top will lift up, exposing the surface burners and wiring harness. The screws are located along the bottom of the front edge of the cooktop. You will need to open the oven door to see them. Then, just follow these steps:

Before you begin:

1. UNPLUG the range before servicing. There is dangerous voltage still present even with burners turned off.

2. There are a few screws located under the front edge of the cook top. You will need to open the oven door to see them. Remove these screws and the top should lift up. If the range is not equipped with any kind of hinge supports, the top will have to be propped up.

On some ranges, there is a disconnect plug for the surface element wiring harness. If you have this feature, Follow these steps:

a. Unplug the cook top and leave the elements in place.

b. Place the whole cook top assembly face-down on a soft surface (like some old towels, or a blanket).

c. Remove the bad surface element by removing only the bracket pair that the affected element is attached to. Leave the rest of the elements wired together. Write down the wire color codes so you can be sure the new element is installed correctly. HINT: A digital camera can save you some time.

d. When installing the new surface element, make sure you use the same alignment marks (the numbered positions around the perimeter) as the old element. Avoid touching the burner surface and handle with care. Try to handle from the underside of the element only. Oil from your hands can cause damage to the element and/or premature failure. The elements are fragile.

If the wiring harness does NOT unplug, prop the cook top in place and install the surface element from underneath. A helpful hint: Use some duct tape to hold the assembly until you have screwed it back into place. Don't forget to remove the duct tape when completed.

I want to lift the cook top on GE range jbp82shss so that I can clean out all the dust. can I do this

Yes. Disconnect power to range. Open oven door and remove hex head screws at front edge of cooktop from the bottom side. Lift up front of cooktop. Burner units can then be removed from the underside of the cooktop. Be careful not to damage the gray insulating material around the burner elements if you remove the elements from the cooktop glass.

My spark module is probably out, but I don't know how to open up the range to look at it/replace it. How is this done?

Most newer ranges with sealed burner cooktops can be a little bit tricky to open. People have a tendency to try and lift the cooktop up like on the older ranges and end up damaging the range and causing a gas leak. The first thing to do is to unplug the range of course. Then start by removing the rear panel of the range. From there you can get a visual feel of what you are up against. With the back panel removed you should be able to see into the top part of the range. Most newer sealed burner cooktops require you to disconnect the screws holding the burner tubes to the bottom of the cooktop. If you do not remove these screws you will break the tubes when you lift the cooktop. Most of the time the screws are removable from the top at the burner heads. Once these screws are removed you should be able to lift the cooktop up. From there the ignition wiring and spark module should be available now for servicing.

I need to replace the glass cooktop on my Maytag electric stove

  1. Open oven door and remove two screws that secure top.
  2. Lift up front and slide forward about 8 inches so that you can disconnect two wire couplings.
  3. Place on table upside down(I put newspaper down to catch the broken shards of glass) and remove burner unit (1piece, 4 screws).
  4. Place old burners on new stovetop in the same position as original.
  5. Remove 4 white plastic shims (round) from old stovetop and put on new stovetop.
  6. Tighten all screws and then sit it back on stove (two front tabs fit into slots) and then insert screws into holes and tighten.
  7. Took about 20 minutes, including vacuuming broken glass from inside burners and cleaning grease form crevices between burners and old stovetop.
  8. Wrap old stovetop in the newspapers that are underneath it and place it all in a plastic garbage bag to avoid any broken glass from falling out.

How do you open the stove lid of a Kenmore 7907138 five burner gas range? I need to clean it.

You need to be careful with sealed burner ranges. If you try to lift the range top you can damage the alluminum gas pipes for the burners under the range top. Check to see if the burner heads lift off. If the burner heads are held on by screws make sure you remove those first. With the heads removed look down into the cooktop thru the hole where the burner sits. Make sure the orfice is not attached to the lid. If they are you may see a screw you can remove. Look for any other screws behind the oven door that may be attached to the lid. Apply light pressure when trying to lift the lid. If you feel any major resistence DO NOT FORCE IT UP. Sears.com also has parts schematics for every range they make and that will visually help with the dis-assembly because you can see how the parts go together. Also MAKE SURE YOU UNPLUG THE APPLIANCE AND TURN OFF THE GAS VALVE BEFORE WORKING ON IT!!!

Want know how to open the top of range to clean?

This is not really meant to be done by user. If done incorrectly you could easily bend or break the gas lines to the top burners.

First you need to remove all the screws in the top burners and remove the burners. Then carefully twist out the ignitors. They do not necessarily have to be disconnected. Then remove all the knobs in front. and remove the manifold cover (that's the cover behind the knobs).

You will then be able to remove the screws that hold the top down and lift the top up high enough to clean under it. Lift this carefully though making sure that the gas lines do not bend when you do it.
