I have downloaded driver from canon website to vista. tells me that it has successfully installed. appears in printer list as default printer. when asking to print, then tells me that has not installed.!!!!!! vry frustrating have uninstalled and tried again several times always same problem. have ruled out usb and printer faults. printer works fine on windows me, (intalled from disk) please help. Have even bought another printer ip1800 from canon and get same problem.

Some folks have had good luck resolving issues like you have by deleting the
INFCACHE.1 file, which can get corrupted with bad data and cause issues. The
file is located at C:\Windows\inf. There, scroll down to the INFCACHE.1 file
and right click it and select delete. To do this, you will likely have to
give yourself permission to delete it, because of Windows built-in security. Just right click the file, select Properties and then click on the
security tab. Let us know whether this procedure does anything. Sometimes
it does and sometimes not.

The Error 311 indicates a communication error between the Mac and the printer. If you upgraded the Mac from Leopard to Snow Leopard, there could be older driver files for the iP4300 that are conflicting with the new driver. Therefore I would start your repair by trashing all of the Canon files.
The first step is to disconnect the USB cable between the printer and the Mac.
The next step is to delete the current printer queue for the iP4300. Open Print & Fax, select the iP4300 in the list and click the minus ( - ) button to remove the queue. You can now exit Print & Fax.
The third step is to remove the Canon files. These are located in HD > Library > Printer > Canon > BJPrinter. Select all the files inside this folder and trash them. Then empty the Trash and restart the Mac.
With the Mac restarted, you can now run the installer for the 10.6 driver you downloaded from the Canon web site. Ensure this driver is version 10.26.0.0.
Once the driver has been installed you can connect the iP4300 USB cable to the Mac again and open Print & Fax. If the install has worked, the printer should automatically appear in the Printers list (note that this can take several seconds). If the printer does not appear, click + to add and select the Default view. The iP4300 should appear in this view. Select it and click Add. You may get a prompt stating the printer is already installed. If so, cancel this install and try printing with the new iP4300 queue.
If the error message still occurs, then I would try another USB cable. They have been known to cause the 311 error.
Did you do a upgrade to vista from xp? Or is the computer with vista a different computer? The reason why I ask is if you did an upgrade the old drivers and software for xp may still be in the system. The first thing I would do is go into the device manager and remove the printer and un-install any software for the printer. Re-boot the computer and windows vista should detect the new hardware. I would let vista check online for the driver and install it. If it cant't find one the choose the driver you downloaded online. After that then try installing the printer software. Also make sure that when you go to print something that your printer is set up as the default printer.

It sounds like a driver problem, maybe caused by installing some new software that interferes with your printer settings.
Try downloading the latest drivers and software from the Canon website.
Before you install them, un-install all of your printer software then shut down your computer, even if the un-install program doesn't tell you to.
Switch off your printer, then unplug the usb cable from the printer (not the pc).
When the computer restarts, install the new software and drivers exactly the same way as in the original instructions that came with the printer.
Only turn the printer on and plug the usb cable in when the instructions tell you to.
If this doesn't work, the printer may be faulty. If you contact the dealer you bought it from, they may have a warranty running with Canon that lasts more than the guarantee period. It's worth a try, though you may have to pay for a courier to pick up and bring back your printer.
