No you do not need oven on! if it is a freestanding pilot that passes gas as soon as supply is on it should light with a match, if it isnt you may have a clogged orifice on that pilot hood, you need to remove the pilot line at pilot hood and get orifice out it may be stuck in there and need some coaxing but it'll come out it may even stick to pilot line once you take it apart, just clean with a clean rag and replace, I would clean pilot hood at this time as well , wire brush or very small file to clean any rust in there, be carefull not to break hood of pilot body it is easy to do if your not gentle

How do I lite the oven pilot

If it's an older model with a true pilot light you turn on the gas at supply line valve, open oven door, remove bottom panel to access pilot and burner. Sometimes it's easier to remove broiler drawer on these models but regardless take a lighter and light pilot. Most models are electronic ignitions which if you have it probably needs replaced if it doesn't ignite the burner in under a minute or minute and 15 secs. It could also be a bad thermostat if the burner ignites within the time period described above

How do I light a pilot in a gas oven

On a pilot type system you typical hold an ignition source (lighter) to the pilot while holding down the thermostat (push the oven temp knob in) and hold for approx 20 seconds make sure you have the lighter directly on the pilot assemble in oven while you are doing this once it's lite continue to hold for the 20 seconds if you are not sure you are doing it right or if you smell gas vent your house and seek a knowledgable tech

Oven wont light, pilot is lite but the burners wont ignight

Bakers Pride used several different safety valves over the years. If your oven has a pilot valve that has a beige know that you hold in and turn to light the pilot, then after it lights you need to turn the beige know another half round to the "on" setting. If you push in a red button to light the pilot, it may not be getting enough heat on the thermocouple where the pilot flame should be heating it up. Be sure the main gas valve on the front of the oven is turned to the on position also. On some models the pilot will light with the main gas valve in the off position. If you look at the pilot flame while it is burning, make sure that it is hitting the pencil sized thermopile enough to make it glow red. If not bend it slightly to improve the heating.

The top burners light but the oven won't light at all. The stove is 19 years old. I tried turning the oven on and using a lighter thinking the pilot went out but it won't light.

Your oven has a pilot safety. This keeps gas from being sent to the burner(s) if the pilot is not lit. It has gone bad, they all do sooner ar later. You need to get it replaced.

My gas was recently shut off for repairs from the gas company, now its back on and i dont know how to get my oven or stove back on

Ok you did not mention if your oven or stive had pilot lights or igniters. Given you asked the question how too turn it back on I have to assume it does not have electronic igniters. You need to light the pilot lights. There are 2 in top that are between each of the 2 burner sets. If you can not gain access to the pilot light by lifting the top of the stove up you can use a fire starter type lighter and re-light them. Sometimes they will self light if you just use a match on the burners.
As for the oven you can gain access 2 ways to the pilot light. One is to unlatch and remove the oven lower inside panel. The pilot light will be near the burner head. Just light it. The other is to remove the broiler drawer and reach way back in there to light the pilot light.

Again if you have igniter ignition all you have to do is turn on a burner or the oven. Good Luck.

Oven Not Heating Up

if the pilot light is working it must be the thermal bulb is not sensing the heat, you can try and use a long nosed lighter and try to heat the bulb up and turn the gas on and the added heat might help it kick on. Give it a try.

Oven does not work.

Just a guess. There may be something called a thermo-coupler which needs to feel the heat of the pilot light before it will allow the gas to turn on. If it's not working ... no gas.

I have a 1948 Magic chef gas oven.Model # 8620. The gas was turned off at my home and the pilot light on the oven went out. The gas is now on and I need to relight the pilot light. I am not sure on the ove...

You did say 1948, as in 60 year old range?
Well, gas ranges did not have fancy safety valves or things like that back then. Most likely when you turn on the gas, a small amount of gas begins escaping at the pilot orifice. Then use a long handled lighter to put a flame there. Pilot should light right away.

Burners on gas stove work but oven and broiler not working

Most ovens, unless they have an electric igniter (does it go tick tick tick when plugged in and turned on? If so, it has an electic ignition.) have a pilot light. In order to keep gas from flowing out, and to prevent a possible explosion when the pilot light has gotten put out, they have an electric thermocouple on them that shuts off the gas when it gets cold. Plug the cord back in, and relight your pilot light by holding the lighter (I recommend a fireplace match or bbq lighter, not a cigarette lighter to prevent singed knuckle hairs!) over the thermocouple for a couple of minutes.
