Question about Contax G2 35mm Rangefinder Camera

1 Answer

Contax g2 28mm lens will not click into mount

Hello, as of yesterday my Contax g2 28mm lens will not click into the mount. I rotate the lens but it does not couple with the rangefinder and no "click" occurs as it should. My 90mm lens still works with my g2 and everything seems to function with that lens. The 28mm was mounted properly just one week ago and as far as I know nothing has happened to the lens since removing it. Can anyone make sense of this? Thanks, JD

Hi JD,

It's very rare that I'd advise you to look elsewhere, but with an expensive and specialist camera like your you really need the best quality advice from an experienced audience.

I have a few interchangeable lens rangefinders myself, but they don't include any Contax models so any educated guesses on my part will be unhelpful and possibly harmful.

I'd therefore strongly suggest that you register for free with the excellent Rangefinder Forum and repost your question in the "Zeiss Contax" section.

Hopefully, you'll find that someone else replies on this site with a valid answer but asking on the RFF as well is still an excellent idea.

Regards,

Rob

p.s. I post on RFF as "Obertelli" as well, but not very often.

I have been using this lens on my Canon Rebel EOS for years, but this morning it won't detach from the camera.

Hello,
While turning the lens look at the lens mount. Does the lens turn but the mount stay stationary? If so maybe there is a connection issue. With the release button pressed then rapidly turning the lens back and forth, maybe it will release. Maybe something simple, or the lens connector to the lens mount or lens mount itself is the issue.

The Contax/Yashica lens mount was never popular to start with anywhere in the world, and the AF version of that mount was even rarer.

Your camera can only use lenses which are scarce, expensive and hard to find. Just use the camera as it is, and get another camera body with more widely available lenses such as Nikon, Canon, Pentax or Olympus. You can often pick those up for free or very cheaply.

We installed a lens onto a N2020 that snapped right in and now it won't come off, any suggestions?

There is a lens release button to the right of the lens mount - make sure it is pressed fully before trying to rotate the lens to remove it. When you press the release button, there is a little pin in the lens mount that is retracted to let the lens turn. If you do that and the lens still does not rotate to be removed (and you are rotating it the opposite direction that you mounted it) then the release button assembly is probably broken and the camera will need servicing.

Will it fit nikon d300

No it will not. You have to get only lens that have the right mount for Nikon. This one probably does not have, Unless it's designed especialy for Nikon, which I doubt.

There's fungus inside the rear element - how do I remove the glass to get at it?

Any way you want.
The problem with fungus is that it etches the glass, which then has to be replaced. Unless you can find a stockpile of Contax 50mm f/1.7 Planar T* lenses for a replacement part, you'll have to buy another lens.

Let alone the recalibrating after replacing the lens element.

Sorry about that.

I have a number of Contax lenses I inherited from my father and I was wondering what digital camera bodies they would fit.

Without adapters, none. Contax shared their CY lens mount with Yashica and both produced fine cameras and lenses but neither manufacturer survived the transition from film to digital so there are no digital cameras which can use them as standard.

With the correct adapter you can mount most of them to Olympus Four Thirds and Micro Four Thirds for certain but some CY lenses may have rear elements which project backwards too far into the camera body. You'll also find that there will be no automatic stop down and no communication of aperture, zoom or focus settings to whichever digital body you fit them to.

Many CY lenses are excellent Carl Zeiss T* units but like almost all old 35mm lenses the optical designs were designed by engineers using slide rules and calculators. Except for the occasional "accidentally good" lens you shouldn't expect the optical performance to match contemporary designs which have the benefit of computer aided design and the latest advances in optical technology. This is especially true at apertures wider than around f8.

You may find adapters from CY to anything else to be hard to obtain/expensive simply due to lack of demand: even at their peak, Contax and Yashica SLR cameras were infrequently encountered and had very low sales volumes.

Although this may all sound negative, my advice is to check ebay for an adapter; many good Chinese sellers offer excellent and cheap adapters but research their feedback. Your lenses should be much better than the average 35mm SLR lenses and if you can accept a few compromises are still capable of producing very good photographs under the right conditions. Alternatively find a good used body like a Contax 139 or Yashica FX-D and scan the 35mm negatives afterwards for best results.

I had the lens mounted

The FEE display means that your lens aperture ring is not set to the F/22 or F/32 ( whichever is at the end of the rotation ). Mount the lens on the camera, then rotate the aperture ring all the way toward the highest number ( 22 or 32 ). If your lens has no aperture ring, the post on the body at the 8 o'clock position of the lens mount is probably broken. It has to be replaced by a repair shop.
