Question about Televison & Video

Trying to get DVD recorder to work with HDTV. Recorder is Panasonic DMR-EA18; TV is Panasonic, Class 720p LCD HDTV. Both have viera link. Following hook up instructions in manual using red, white and yellow AV cables, and tuning the comcast box to the station that I wanted to schedual a recording, apparently worked, but when I tried to play it back I got this message: Your HDTV does not support AV cables. Use YPR Component cables. - So I got the component cable and connected it to TV and recorder - NOTHING. Could not schedual or play back presumably. Then I connected the comcast box to the recorder with the origonal triplet red, white and yellow leaving the component connection between recorder and TV in place. Then I could program a schedualed recording bu when I tried to play it, I got this message: Your HDTV does not support HDCP. Use YPR Component to wath TV. What I need is instructions of what cables to use and whether they go "out" or "in"- I'm rather familiar by now with the recepticles on the STB, TV and recorder. Thank you/

The Comcast STB has only one set of component and one set of AV recepticles.

But I do not have the red and yellow cables anyway.

The manual claims that the connection can be made using an HDMI cable from recorder to TV but that does not function at all.

  • twandx Feb 06, 2010

As I wrote before - The Comcast STB has only one set of component and one set of AV recepticles.

There is no place to connect the two headed cable on the STB.

  • twandx Feb 06, 2010

I cannot try the Rylee Smith solution because
the Comcast STB has only one set of component and one set of AV recepticles.

There is no place to plug in the two headed unit he suggests.

    cableguy 3028 -

Thank you. Worked great but NO SOUND. Can you address this problem?

  • twandx Feb 07, 2010

Follow up from my previous post -

I did another test run and got this all too familiar message: "DVI Alert - HDTV does not support HDCP. Use YPPb component connection to watch TV"

Again, there was no sound - also no picture this time - just the big green alert.

  • twandx Feb 07, 2010

There are white and red recepticles on the TV located as you describe but nothing similar on the recorder. All that is left there unused is the red, white and yellow recepticles - "out".

  • twandx Feb 07, 2010

It did get the sound going on two tests I made - I thought everything worked, then that DVI Alert came on for the tests I made afterwards.

Once that Alert sign comes on, nothing works. There is no sound or recording - just a big green sign which I have no way of removing.

  • twandx Feb 08, 2010

Whether I used the recorder remote or the TV remote [you did not specify], I do not get any user preference menu. The closest I came to what you suggest is from the recorder remote setup - with this screen:

    COMPONENT OUTPUT SCHEDULE

    480i

    480p

    720p

    1080i

But only 480i and 480p are active. Presently set on 480p.

I cannot find a way to activate the 720p.

  • twandx Feb 08, 2010

please indicate the model of your Panasonic TV

IT IS IN THE FIRST LINE OF MY PROBLEM REPORT ABOVE.

and try having a media ( not the one you have recorded ) played on the

WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY MEDIA? A DISK?

    recorder connected to the TV

using RCA ( 3 ) cables, and see if playback works.

ARE YOU TALKING THE COMPANY RCA? COMPONENT OR RED WHITE AND YELLOW?

  • twandx Feb 08, 2010

    You asked -

    Feb 08, 2010
    - Do you have anything connected to the TV via HDMI or DVI??

    The answer is NO.

  • twandx Feb 08, 2010

    Thanks, I'll try again.

    You asked:

    Feb 08, 2010
    - Also are you trying to record HD channels or is this on any channel when you record it.

Have NOT tried to record any HD channels.

  • twandx Feb 08, 2010

    Feb 08, 2010
    - Sorry about that use the cable box remote and turn off the cable box and then press the menu button for the cable box.

Nothing happens. The TV is unresponsive to the cable box remote. When I use the TV remote, it does respond with a menu but it is not helpful.

The closest remote that comes with the info is with the recorder which gives 4 component output scheduals 480i or p. 720p is listed but not active - will not change. Other inactive is 1080i.

"The Comcast STB has only one set of component and one set of AV recepticles. " use these cables

temporarily just for " eliminating the cause.".

You mention " Class 720p LCD HDTV " and the player output is 480p ( which can be adjusted ? )

Try the 3 RCA cables first , use any media , such as disk ( any media known OK that have

previously work ) , or try using your HDMI cable,

Just like to know if playback is possible on both

a ) what i am trying to say is:

    for playback first

have a media , a DVD or anything just to see on your TV if the " Recorder " is working OK.

we will go to your recording process , after we establish that you can play clearly ( good audio and

picture ) on your TV and note down the settings.

Note: the other one is not yet connected ( comcast box )

or try connecting Comcast direct first on your TV without the Recorder

  • Rommel Cana
    Rommel Cana Feb 08, 2010

    that partially answers your problem.

Have the Comcast directly connected to your TV , if you can work these out then recording will follow.

Post the settings and will try to work these out.

Note : disconnect Recorder ( should not be connected ), will connect it later

Try this option....

  1. Connect with the Yellow/Red/White cable from the back of the cable box to the input on the back of the the DVD.
  2. Connect the component cable to the component out of the DVD to the Component in on the TV.
  3. Go to the SETUP menu on the DVD player.
  4. Select TV SCREEN.
  5. Select COMPONENT OUTPUT SIGNAL.
  6. Select 720p and press OK.
**** NOTE: If you can not view the menu screens then press and hold the STOP and PLAY buttons down at the same time for 10 seconds to reset the video output setting to view the menu****

When to go to record this what you need to do.

1) Set the cable box to the channel to record.
2) When you set the DVD to record tune the DVD to IN1 as the recording source by pressing the input button on the DVD remote.

This should get you working...

Good Luck....

When you connect with the component cable you need the Green, Blue and Red video but you also need to connect to the White and Red audio out just to the right of the component connection on the recorder in order to get sound.

  • Robert Feb 07, 2010

that is correct... use the red and white of those and leave the yellow one open this will provide the sound from the recorder to the TV.

  • Robert Feb 08, 2010

Do you have anything connected to the TV via HDMI or DVI??
Also try this on the cable box...

    1) Turn the power off on the cable box and then press menu. This should bring up a user settings menu.

There should be an output option make sure it is set to 720 and then there should be a setting for YPbR override and this should be set to 480i.

  • Robert Feb 08, 2010

Sorry about that use the cable box remote and turn off the cable box and then press the menu button for the cable box.

  • Robert Feb 08, 2010

Also are you trying to record HD channels or is this on any channel when you record it.

To hook up you need to go from the satellite box to the recorder then to the TV. If you do that then you should be able to record the show on Tv. You can get the manual on the link below. Page 7 tells you how to hook up.

Panasonic DMR- EA18 DVD player/recorder - Remote control Problem

I figured out, unlike all the other posts, you don't have an enter button. But Instead, you would hit the 2 and OK button at the same time for a few seconds. I had the RC1 message and I did the 1 with OK and it worked. so if you have RC2, you should hit the 2 and OK. Should work!!
