My canon ZR85 Digital Video Camcorder will not record and you can not view anything through the viewfinder or on the screen. Both are black. I can play tapes but can not record anything.

Viewfinder and LCD screen only show black and record black

If camcorder shows old recorded tapes picture with correct colors in LCD but does not show live view in camera mode to record new movie then its ccd imager chip failure.
And if camcoder shows live view and old recorded tapes in its eye piece view finder but does not show any thing in LCD the its problem of broekn/ cracked flexible wire between lcd board and main board of camcorder.
Let me know your finding with bit detail to provide you solution/ helpful info.

No image when recording

What you probably have is some kind of condensation issue. This usually happens when the camera is used in places where there's high humidity, low temperature etc., Since you are able to view the pictures that are already taken, I would assume that this is just some kind of sensor issue. Most of the times this can be fixed by leaving the camera ON for about 1hr. This will get the condensation senor to sense everything is back to normal and will power up the viewfinder again.Let me know if it worked so that we can look at other possibilities.

Thanks,
Sai.

My Canon ZR85 has no light in the view finder for recording images. It will play back tapes, but no images when you want to record. Battery is fully charged.

Regarding can't see picture or time code in playback, it is problem of dirty / clogged video heads. Use good quality video head cleaning cassette to clean heads and hope camera will show playback picture.

Good luck.
