Question about Infinity BU-120 Subwoofer

1 Answer

My son and I both own Infinity BU-120 subwoofers, and both exhibit the same problem. Fuse is blown, and the C6 capacitor is blown apart -- literally. I was told to replace that capacitor with a 10mfd, 250VDC electrolytic. I have looked at both sides of the board, and can see no indication as to which circuit trace is positive or negative. Anyone out there with experience on this one? Thanks in advance...

Msullivan56 & son,

Yes indeed... We are on luck...

There are circuit board layout drawings...
on my Favorite FREE "manual" site ...
starting on page 20
(SHOWING POLARITY)...

Plz click here...

Infinity BU 120 Service Manual Amplifier subwoofer Bu 120 hts

Hope this helps...

My First "experience" of getting soot embedded in my SAFETY GLASSES... WAS PLACING OF A MODERATE SIZED
"POLAR" filter capacitor in a pretty large RECTIFIER PANEL...

I HAD FOLLOWED the Circuit Drawing ...
(arguably correctly)
as there was very little of it left)) when
POWER WAS RESTORED ... (sort of)

I came out of the EXPERIENCE WITH AN ENDURING
respect for SAFETY GLASSES... looking rather
like a Raccoon (I'm just saying).

Wear them...!!

My sub woofer making noise like machine gun w out connect toamp

Disconnect the sub-woofer and see if the noise stops, if so the amplifier is OSCILLATING and so produces the noise. This can be related to fault with the pre-amp or audio processing section. Try and heat up the circuit using a hair dryer and if the fault clears then there are faulty electronic capacitors. If leak is seen then the pcb must be washed after the capacitor is replaced which can solve the issue.

What is the size of the JBL PSW-D110 fuse?

The fuse is a 250volt 1.25 amp slow blo.
First thing I would do is check C6 to see if it is bulge or blown - regardless replace it with a 10ufd 100volt Non-polarity capacitor. If the fuse blows again unplug the blue wires from the transformer and plug in unit to an outlet. If fuse does not blow then problem is on PC board. I have a service manual for this item. Probable causes on PC board are Filter Caps, Bridge rectifier (DBA), Amplifier module, or fragments of C6 even causing shorts on board if it had blown.

I have bought C6 from MCM Electronics for under .50 cents but you have to put shrink tube on one lead and bend it back along the body and solder both leads in the board.

Good luck

Is there a on of switch and is the green or red light to be on

There is no main AC power switch on the BU series; it's in standby mode whenever it's plugged in.

When playing music normal LED color should be green. After no signal for 10 minutes or so it will turn back to Red (Standby)

Infinity Entra Sub 150 no sound or power

I had the same problem. When I opened it up, the fuse was blown, and it was a pain to find the fuse it needs (3 Amp, 250 V slow-blow fuse, 5x20 mm). Also, the 2 large electrolytics (big purple things near the amp) and one small capacitor were all blown. For 4 fuses, bought seperately from, and the 2 electrolytics and 1 capacitor, it cost about $20, plus almost 20 more in shipping, which still isnt bad considering the original price of the sub. However, the tricky part is that you have to know how to use a soldering iron to take out the old components and put in the new ones.
