Hello my friend if is not something visual(like unconnected soldering pins on the motherboard)then you can not do anything else than change your motherboard. But if you compare the two slots and you see difference then you can connect this tire or pins with soldering gun.

I have a HP a1514n media system with 2 - 512 sticks of ram. I replaced one of the 512's with a 1GB stick and my system only shows 1024 ram available. I checked the settings in startup and it shows...

First of all, make sure you have the right memory - 240 pin, DDR2 SDRAM, PC2-4200 MB/sec.

Your machine should support the memory as it has two banks of 1. Sometimes it is simply a sequence problem. In older machines with mixed memory, I always put the largest and fastest in the first slot. You might try just reversing the memory.

My IBM thinkpad t30 beeps 8 times at me when i go to turn it on and will not start up what is that

Video memory error. The BIOS cannot write to the frame buffer memory on the video card. Since the frame buffer memory is on the video board's memory chips then you will have to replace the entire board.

check your laptop's memory sticks, one of them may be either loose or not working. if you're still within the warranty coverage, i recommend that you bring your ibm to the technical assistance. if not, try opening gently the ram sticks compartment and take both of em out, clean them with a eraser (only the connection pins), then, put them back in place. if the problem still persists, try changing their disposal and repeat the process 2 or 3 times, if it still shows half memory, then try removing one of the sticks and turn on the computer. when it doesn't starts, you've identified the faulty ram stick. replace it with a new one. oh, and by the way, a quick reminder, always ensure that you're working with your computer turned OFF, with NO BATTERY and DISCONNECTED from the external power, right? Glad to help!

Good memory modules put into second slot are not detected in T-30. The second 512 MB module does not show up in the BIOS setup or in Windows XP.

Hello my friend, did you make sure that the ram you installed is DDR SDRAM/Non-ECC/266.0 MHz and that you did put more that 1GB RAM that is the maximum amount your motherboard can take?

T 30 IBM MEMORY PROBLEM

Hi!

Call 800-IBM-SERV and describe the problem. Say that you heard that there's an "engineering change" available to correct it, described in document MIGR-44772.

Repair should be free within the warranty period, and probably free even outside the warranty.

Have fun!

the memory is dual channel, so you have to use matched memory for it to work 1gig in each slot if possible, check the 1 gigs and 512's to see if they run at the same bus speed, if they are not matched there is your problem try a gig and a 512 in slot 0 to see if it picks the memory up, also there is sometimes an option in the bios to dissable dual mode

T30's do have a well reported problem with their memory slots. It is possible to fix it if you are brave and moderatly competent with a low-power (15-20W) soldering iron with a good bit (I recommend a flat oblique tip of about 2-3mm, not a pointed one).

Firstly, heat the soldering iron and clean all traces of solder from the bit. You can use a wet solder sponge, or even damp kitchen paper. It is VITAL to remove all solder.

Remove power and battery from the T30. Open the memory cover, and remove all memory.

Taking great care, press the bit of the hot iron with moderate pressure (about twice what you would use to press a key with one finger) on each pin in turn for about 1 second, on the contacts of the memory slot that is not working. Because you have no solder on the tip, it does not matter that you touch more than one contact at a time, but there are very small surface mount capacitors between the sockets. Be careful not to touch and unsolder these.

There is a warning here. Do no wipe the iron across the contacts. Always lift the iron before pressing it on the next pin(s). If you do wipe iron across the contacts, you WILL bend and short them. These are surface mount components, and the wire contacts are easily disturbed and shorted. If you do short the contacts, it will be difficult or impossible to fix.

Remember there are pins on both sides of the memory socket. Do not worry if some of the plastic of the socket melts, it is not a problem.

Continue until you have worked on all of the pins. Patience is a virtue here. Allow to cool, re-assemble and test.

I cannot promise that this will fix your T30, but I have extended the life of 2 out of 3 T30s I worked on in this way. Note extended, because the design flaw will cause the problem again sometime in the future. The board appears to flex, which puts strain on the solder joints.
