Hi
Need to know when you try to search the network in the intel proset , does it find the network name or not . ie. does it see your wireless connection.

Alternatively you can use the following link for troubleshooting
http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dsn/en/document?c=us&cs=RC1084719&docid=361597&l=en&s=k12

Thanks

I had usualy solved mysterious problems with other intel PRO wireless cards not authenticating, loosing signal, etc, by simply upgrading to the latest intel drivers.
Also using the Intel connection manager instead of the windows or Dell/other notebook manfucaturer's product is far more reliable.
Hope this helps.

How do I turn the radio on the wireless card

When your computer is switched on, the WiFi radio is almost always transmitting or receiving signals. In certain situations, as in an airplane, signals from the radio may cause interference. Use the following methods if you need to disable the radio and use your notebook without emitting radio signals.
Use the Optional Computer Radio On or Off Switch

If your computer has an external switch installed, use it to switch the WiFi radio on or off. See the computer manufacturer for more information about this switch. If you have Intel® PROSet/Wireless installed, the current state of the radio displays in the Intel PROSet/Wireless main window and on the Taskbar.

Use Intel PROSet/Wireless to Switch the WiFi Radio On or Off

From Intel PROSet/Wireless, the WiFi radio can be switched on or off. The status icon on Intel PROSet/Wireless displays the current state of the radio.

To start Intel® PROSet/Wireless, use one of the following methods:
  • Click Start > Programs > Intel PROSet Wireless > WiFi Connection Utility.
  • Right-click the Taskbar icon prosettaskbaricon1.jpg located in the lower right corner of your Windows* Desktop to open the Taskbar menu. Click Configure WiFi.
  • Double-click the Taskbar icon to open Intel PROSet/Wireless.
Switch the WiFi Radio On or Off from the Taskbar Icon

To switch the WiFi radio on or off, click the Taskbar icon image1_ipswtaskbaricon.jpg and select WiFi On or WiFi Off.

How to use the Device Manager to Disable the WiFi Radio

The WiFi radio can be disabled (made non-functional) from the Windows* Device Manager.

Note: If you disabled the WiFi radio from Windows*, then you must use Windows to turn the radio on. You cannot use a hardware switch or Intel PROSet/Wireless to enable the radio again.

Windows* XP
  1. From your desktop, right-click My Computer.
  2. Click Properties.
  3. Click Hardware.
  4. Click Device Manager.
  5. Double-click Network adapters and expand the selection by clicking the Plus symbol.
  6. Right-click the installed WiFi adapter.
  7. Choose Disable from the menu.
  8. Click OK.
Windows Vista*
  1. Use Control Panel > Mobile PC > Adjust commonly used mobility settings (if you use Classic View, select Control Panel > Power Options.
  2. Click Turn Wireless Off .
Hope this helps !

Ip Address 169.x.x.x Wireless Internet Connection Problems 6400/E1505 Dell Laptop

questions to ask yourself:
- I the wifi card connecting to the routers wifi network? or your next door neighbors?
- did it connect with the correct WEP? withouot the right WEP it will not communicatwith the WAP
- is the router set to be the DHCP server? this function is normally defaulted to ON

some times though windows simply has to have its TCP stack reset after having been connected to too many different networks, especially if you are a heavy wifi user.

open a command prompt: I see you already know how.

Type this command line

netsh int ip reset <anyfilenameyoulike>.txt
the txt file will be a log file tha will be placed on your main (c:) drive after the NETSH command has run

next lets reset winsock since we are here in the command line anyhow

netsh winsock reset

if everything goes right you'll be prompted to reboot you machine.

hopefully this will solve your inability to aquire an IP address from the router.

Ip Address 169.x.x.x Wireless Internet Connection Problems 6400/E1505 Dell Laptop

when you renewed the ip address, windows assigns an ip address of 169.xxx.x.x, this your router will not be able to see. if you have enabled dhcp in the router, check that the wireless card is set to obtain an ip address automatically. If you have no luck that way, go to another pc and in the network card properties, look at the assigned ip address number that the router has given the pc, eg 192.168.2.2, if you have more than two pc you can bet that the other number assign wil be 192.168.2.3, so go to the problem pc's network card problem and and set the ip address manually to eg 192.168.2.4 and set the dns address to 255.255.255.0, save settings and try connecting again. the only other thing stopping a conection would be if the security, eg wep or wpa is enabled and the number has not been entered correctly into the network card properties.
