Smell emitting from gas heater

Carbon monoxide is completely odourless and every sort of combustion of a carbon or hydrocarbon fuel produces carbon monoxide. That is why heaters should not be used without adequate and efficient ventilation and heaters should be kept in good order because efficient combustion produces less and inefficient combustion produces more.

Inefficient combustion and the need for service can often be recognised by the characteristic blue flame being tinged with yellow.
Heaters burning inefficiently often produce a smell for the sensitive or stinging eyes but that is not caused by carbon monoxide.

The gas itself is also odourless and the characteristic smell is added to warn people of leaks. I think the added gas smell tends to settle or separate from the liquid gas to some extent so there will be times when it is so concentrated it isn't entirely neutralised by the burning process, at least that is my theory.

A strong smell of gas when first comeson

Absolute danger>>>>!!!!!!!
You absolutely must call gas company immediately.
They will turn off gas to water heater immediately.
Leaking gas appliance is extremely dangerous.

If you have propane, the gas is heavier than air and will settle to floor. So you can be standing in an invisible puddle of explosive gas and never smell it.
If you have natural gas, the gas rises to ceiling. The entire ceiling cavity can be filled with explosive gas, but you only smelled it briefly before it drifted upwards.

Do not delay getting this problem repaired by professionals, or fixya might lose a customer.

Last year we had all the siding on our tv, trailer, replaced due to hail damage. When we finally got our trailer back from the rv repair shop we have had nothing but problems with our Atwood hot water tank...

Immediate danger!
You have a gas leak.
Propane is heavier than air and will settle on the floor.
The floor can be covered and ignite and you will not smell it while standing or sitting or laying in bed.
Absolutely open the door and leave trailer. Turn off the gas to the heater if the shut-off is outside.
Possibly you have a bad gas control valve. This should be repaired professionally.

Came down stairs water heater off and pan filled with water

Copy following link for troubleshooting leaking water heater.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Leaking-water-heater.html

You posted question under propane gas heater.
Propane is heavier and air, and this type gas water heater should not be installed in basement (below grade) since gas leak can fill basement with explosive gas.
Water leak does not cause gas leak, so water leak is separate problem.
Recommended for propane safety: install gas detector close to floor near gas water heater
Regular Natural Gas heater, install gas detector higher on wall since NG is lighter than air and will rise.

We just replaced the propane gas line. Our stove is gas and it lights, but neither of our gas water heaters will light. Both water heaters are new and have been working for about 4 months before the...

You have to purge the air from the lines.
At the water heater, take a wrench and loosen the gas line until you smell gas coming from the line. Then tighten the gas line. Check it for leaks with a soapy water solution. Let the gas smell clear, then light the pilot on the heater.
